Coby Cowgill's Career Stats

2012: Selected in 23rd round of MLB draft by Texas…started his season with 17 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, including seven innings of one-run ball in VMI's opener at #2 South Carolina…part of VMI's lone shutout of the year, an 8-0 blanking of Lafayette Feb. 24…started the year 4-0…allowed just one earned run over six inning 3/16 at UNC Asheville…earned a win agains Presbyterian March 23...took a tough loss 4/14 at Coastal…struck out team-high 58, a total that ranked just outside the Big South's top 10, despite making just 12 starts.

2011: Sophomore rose from mid-week starter to Friday night ace during the season…ranked 10th in the Big South in ERA (3.73) and fourth in batting average against (.233)…went 4-3 while averaging just under six innings per start…best start of the year came April 15 at Charleston Southern, where he went 8 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits…one of those hits came in the first, and the other in the ninth…nearly beat Virginia Feb. 23, allowing just two runs on three hits over 6 1/3 frames…allowed just one earned run in five innings at Richmond (3/1), striking out eight…beat New Mexico State (3/11) with six innings of one-hit ball for first win of season…shut out Winthrop over 6 1/3 innings in his next start, striking out six…gave up just one earned run to Presbyterian College March 25, meaning that during the month of March, Cowgill pitched 23 1/3 innings and allowed just three earned runs…picked up the victory against Gardner-Webb on April 1…was the hard-luck loser to Liberty on April 22, despite eight strong innings in which he gave up just two runs.
    Summer: Went 1-3 in five Coastal Plain League starts, pitching for the Peninsula Pilots.

2010: Won three of his first five collegiate starts…threw VMI's first complete game of the season at SoCon Champion The Citadel (3/17), allowing just a first inning unearned run…struck out nine while allowing just four hits against the Bulldogs…started game two of VMI's opening series against Bucknell…worked a strong five-plus innings to score his first collegiate win in game two against Lafayette (2/27)…allowed just one run on three hits in that contest…worked six shutout innings against UMES (3/6), striking out nine and allowing just one hit in a 20-1 VMI victory…converted to reliever midway through the season, and had a strong first outing out of the pen, allowing one run over 2.2 innings against Longwood (4/6). Summer:  In 10 outings (seven starts), posted an impressive 1.98 ERA, including a .215 batting average against.

High School/Personal: Four-year letterman as a pitcher and utility player under head coach Chris Howlett at Maury…earned Second Team All-Tidewater accolades…named to the Virginian-Pilot’s All-Tidewater Team as a pitcher…Eastern District Player of the Year after leading the Commodores to the district’s regular season and tournament championships…in his career, went 19-6 with 279 strikeouts in 189 innings…also a three-year letterman while playing basketball and golf…member of the National Honor Society... son of Kenneth Cowgill and Vicki Orourke...competed in the American Legion State Tournament several times, hitting .542 with five home runs while going 7-1 with a 1.30 ERA in 67 innings in 2007…Grandfather, David Basco, played semi-pro baseball…majoring in economics & business.
