2012: Drafted in the 21st round of the MLB draft by the Chicago White Sox...returned from Tommy John surgery to make the start March 14 against Old Dominion...took a loss a week later against UVA...pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five, in game against ODU March 27...had a shutout inning of work in Campbell series...had a hard-luck relief loss against Gardner-Webb at the end of April, but was the winner in relief in VMI's season-ending win at VCU...finished the year with a 1-3 record, an 8.40 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched.
2011: Started the year as VMI's Friday starter, but succumbed to a season-ending injury in early March…went 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three appearances…did strike out 13 in just 10 innings of work…took the loss in the season opener at Florida State, but beat Binghamton 5-3 a week later, striking out nine in six innings…gave up a run in the first inning against Bucknell (3/4), before leaving due to the injury that would end his season.
2010: Ranked fourth in the Big South in strikeouts (89) while walking just 29 in 72 innings…averaged 3.1 K per walk…struck out 11.12 batters per nine innings…VMI was 10-4 in his starts…all told, Lopez was 5-3 with a 5.25 ERA…was VMI's opening day starter…got his first win of the year 2/27 against Lafayette, working 4.2 innings in a seven-inning contest…defeated UMES 3/5, striking out 11 and giving up just one unearned run over six innings…that was the most strikeouts by a Keydet hurler in nearly two years…got a no-decision against La Salle (3/13), giving up three runs in 5.1 innings, but won his next two starts, against High Point and CSU…lasted only one inning 4/2 against UNC Asheville, leaving for precautionary reasons, but earned yet another win 4/10 against Gardner-Webb…that would be Lopez's last win of the season, despite striking out at least five in all of his six remaining starts…went 0-3 with three no-decisions over the last six weeks of the year…pitched VMI to a victory in the First Round of the Big South Championship against UNC Asheville (5/25), allowing two runs in four innings.
2009: Made 13 appearances as a freshman, including two starts…impressed in his first collegiate start, allowing two hits and no walks in four innings, striking out seven at Norfolk State (3/10)…threw two scoreless and hitless innings against William & Mary (3/4), striking out three…worked 2.1 innings out of the bullpen at Virginia Tech (3/17), allowing two runs…in his second career start, allowed just two runs on five hits through 5.1 innings against Norfolk State, taking a no decision.
High School/Personal: Four-year letterman at Stafford…as a senior, earned First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region accolades…tabbed Honorable Mention All-Metro by the Washington Post…went 1-0 with a no-hitter as a junior while hitting .310 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs as a corner infielder…ranked fifth in the region in home runs as a junior…also lettered as a center on the basketball team and earned academic letters...son of Jose Lopez and Cynthia Bird…played for American Legion Post 290…went 6-0 with a no-hitter for the Blue Ridge Showcase team…majoring in psychology.
