VMI Basketball Adds Gabriel, Whiting, Jr. To Recruiting Class
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom announced Wednesday the signings of 6-3 guard Keith Gabriel (Charlotte, N.C./ United Faith School) and 6-7 power forward Wayne Whiting, Jr. (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) to the 2008-09 recruiting class. “We are very excited that Keith and Wayne are part of the VMI basketball family,” added Baucom. “They both excelled at very successful high school programs and played for two very good coaches.”

Maypray Highlights Second VMI Football Scrimmage
LEXINGTON, Va. – Rising junior back Tim Maypray rushed for 51 yards on seven carries and caught a 53-yard touchdown pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Cameron Jones to highlight VMI’s second football scrimmage held on a sunny and warm Wednesday afternoon at Foster Stadium.
The defense had plenty of highlights as well as redshirt freshman defensive back Byron Allen picked off a pass late in the 45-minute scrimmage.

VMI and Reggie Williams Claim Second Straight Basketball Scoring Titles
LEXINGTON, Va. – For the second straight season, VMI Basketball has placed its name atop several national statistical categories in the final stat rankings.
The final NCAA statistical reports dated April 7, 2008 show that VMI led NCAA Division I in scoring offense, steals, and 3-pointers made per game for the second straight season.
Senior forward Reggie Williams also joined an elite group of players in NCAA history by leading the nation in scoring for the second consecutive year, averaging 27.8 PPG.

VMI Football Holds First Scrimmage
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Football held its first scrimmage of spring drills Wednesday afternoon at the turf practice field adjacent to Foster Stadium and the one-hour controlled session gave new VMI head football coach Sparky Woods his first look at the Keydets under game-like conditions.
“I felt like the effort was really good,” said Woods. “It’s been a real pleasure coaching these guys because they really are trying hard and they are trying to absorb the coaching. Rising junior back Zach Collins highlighted the offense with two touches of the ball both resulting in scores.

Reggie Williams Named Portsmouth Invitational All-Tourney
LEXINGTON, Va. - VMI senior forward Reggie Williams wrapped up a successful Portsmouth Invitational Tournament by being named to the All-Tournament team and receiving the Tommy Fennell Award for Sportsmanship.
Williams averaged 16.3 points per game over the three-game tournament including a game-high 22 points in both the first round and championship games.

LEXINGTON, Va. - The opening game of the VMI-Radford Big South Conference baseball scheduled for Friday evening at 6 p.m. has been postponed due to inclement weather.
As of Friday, 10 a.m., the teams were still planning to play single games at 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Gray-Minor Stadium.

Reggie Williams Poised To Claim Second Straight NCAA Scoring Title
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI senior forward Reggie Williams continues to receive post-season accolades on the national, regional, and state level as “March Madness” unfolds.
Williams, who led NCAA Division I in scoring in 2006-07 with a 28.1 average, has all but locked up the race to repeat as the nation’s scoring champ this year.
The 6-6 Psychology major who is expected to graduate from the Institute in June after scoring 2,556 career points, has been also named recently to the National Association Basketball Coach District 4 first team the first team All-State squad selected by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Woods Announces 2008 VMI Football Coaching Staff
LEXINGTON, Va. – Virginia Military Institute head football coach Sparky Woods announced Monday his coaching staff for the 2008 season. The staff includes two new additions and seven assistants who served previously on the staff of former VMI head coach Jim Reid.
The new faces include A.J. Christoff, who will serve as defensive coordinator, and Don Woods, who will coach the Keydet defensive line.
Returning to coach for the Keydets this fall will be Brent Davis (Offensive Coordinator), Bob Bodine (Offensive Line), Greg Shockley (Receivers), Winston October (Secondary), Paul Soltis (Linebackers), Brock Pittman (Offensive Assistant) and Greg Harris (Defensive Assistant).

VMI will play Liberty University again in the opening round of the Big South Conference tournament Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Keydets, who visited Lynchburg last Tuesday night and edged the Flames, 81-79, will enter as the no. 5 seed while the Flames will play as the no. 4 seed. Williams Takes Aim At State D-I Record
LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Reggie Williams, VMI’s and the Big South Conference’s all-time career leading scorer, will try to add another milestone when he plays in his final game at Cameron Hall Saturday.
Williams, now with 2,495 career points, is 22 points away from breaking the state Division I mark held by UVA’s Bryant Stith and set between 1988-92. Stith scored 2,516 points.VMI, which locked up its 14th win of the season in an 81-79 win at Liberty Tuesday night, enters Saturday’s game with High Point still in the hunt for hosting a first-round game in the Big South Conference tournament which gets underway next Tuesday.

Sparky Woods Named New VMI Head Football Coach
LEXINGTON, Va. – Virginia Military Institute athletic director Donny White announced Tuesday that Sparky Woods will become the Keydets’ new head football coach.Woods, a veteran coach in the college ranks with over 30 years of experience, replaces Jim Reid who resigned the position in January to become outside linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins.
Woods becomes the 30th head football coach in the Institute’s 117-year history. He brings ten years of head coaching experience at both the SEC and FCS (I-AA) level.
“I am extremely happy that Sparky Woods was interested in VMI,” said White. “His experience as a head football coach, both at Appalachian State University and the University of South Carolina, put him at the top of our list. I also like his rich background as an offensive coordinator in some outstanding programs. I am excited about the potential of VMI Football and I feel that Coach Woods will build a successful program here.”

LEXINGTON, Va. - Two former VMI football assistant coaches, including a former Keydet player, will be wearing Super Bowl rings after the New York Giants dramatic 17-14 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII Sunday night.
Andre Curtis, VMI class of 1999 and a former Keydet linebacker, serves as defensive quality control coach for the Giants coaching staff – a position he has held for two seasons.
David Merritt, who served on the Keydet coaching staff as a defensive assistant for three seasons, has coached the Giants’ secondary the past two seasons.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – VMI senior forward Reggie Williams (Prince George, Va.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played the week of Jan. 14-20, it was announced today by the League office.

Maypray Earns Big South Special Teams Weekly Award
LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore slotback Tim Maypray capped his outstanding season by being selected Big South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in last Saturday’s “Military Classic of the South” against The Citadel. The announcement was made from the league office Monday in Charlotte, N.C.
Maypray, a sophomore from Madisonville, Ky., set a Big South single-game record with 204 kickoff return yards against the Bulldogs, including a conference-record 99-yarder for a score to open the second half.

LEXINGTON, Va. - Virginia Military Institute head coach Duggar Baucom announced the first signee of the 2008-09 recruiting class as Michael Sparks, a 6-4, 185 pounder who plays the wing position, has inked with the Keydets to attend the Institute on a basketball scholarship.
Sparks, who attends Tates Creek High School in Lexington, Kentucky, averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists per game last year as a junior. Said Baucom, “He is an explosive scorer and has all the tools to come in and make and immediate impact on our program."

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. VMI’s option attack rolled up a season-high 551 total yards including 443 rushing and the Keydets snapped a three-game losing streak with a 40-13 win at Robert Morris Saturday at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa.
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Hughes (Williamsburg, Va.) rushed for 136 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns and completed touchdown strikes of 49 and 32 yards to freshman receiver Bryan Barnson (Chesapeake, Va.). Hughes became the first quarterback since Tony Scales (1991 vs. Western Carolina) to rush for over 100 yards and throw for 100 or more yards in a game.

Eight To Be Inducted Into VMI Sports Hall of Fame
LEXINGTON, Va. – Seven former standout cadet-athletes and one distinguished coach have been named to the VMI Sports Hall of Fame and will be officially inducted in November.
The eight inductees, voted for induction at the Spring, 2007 Honors Committee meeting, are William R. Haberlein ’61 (Football), James G. Sherrard ’65 (Track), Michael M. Mayo ’88 (Football), Michael T. Naifeh (Track) ’91, Lewis E. Preston ’93 (Basketball), J. Adam Mickiewicz ’97 (Wrestling), Thomas A. Haskins ’97 (Football) and the late Oscar W. Gupton, former wrestling coach who will be inducted under the special citation category posthumously.
The induction ceremony/dinner will be held Friday evening, November 2 at Cameron Hall at 7 p.m. (Cocktails at 6 p.m.) and the honorees will take review of the Saturday morning parade and will be recognized at halftime of the VMI-Charleston Southern football game Saturday, November 3.

Former VMI Athletic Administrator Tom Joynes Passes Away at 79
LEXINGTON, Va. - Tom Joynes, who served as VMI Athletic Director from 1970 to 1984 and helped guide Keydet sports to one of the most prosperous periods in VMI Athletic history, died Tuesday morning, September 11 in Roanoke, Va. In Joynes’ tenure as Athletic Director, the football team captured Southern Conference titles in 1974 and 1977, the basketball team captured SC crowns in 1976 and 1977 and advanced in the NCAA tournament including a “Elite Eight” appearance in ’76, and the track team won 10 Southern Conference championships and six state titles. After serving as AD, Joynes spent two years as a special assistant to the Superintendent for intercollegiate athletics. He then served as the Institute’s public information officer from 1986 until his retirement in May 1992. The Institute announcement follows.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – VMI’s Joe Taylor made his first college football start a memorable one.
Taylor, a redshirt-sophomore from Benedictine High School in Richmond, Va., played his first game at outside linebacker for the Keydets, and responded with a team-high 12 tackles (four solo, eight assists) in VMI’s 20-0 season–opening win over Lock Haven. For his effort he was named New Balance Big South Defensive Player of the Week.

Castleberry Named UT-Martin Assistant Coach
LEXINGTON, Va. – Recent VMI basketball graduate Jack Castleberry has joined the college coaching ranks after being named an assistant coach at UT-Martin for the 2007-08 year.
VMI head coach coach Duggar Baucom, who coached Castleberry for two seasons, expressed satisfaction and approval in Castleberry’s hiring.
“I am very proud of Jack,” said Baucom. “He is going to be a great college coach. Jack has always been a 'team-first' guy and his knowledge and passion for the game are going serve him well in his new position.”

VMI Football Holds Final Scrimmage of Preseason Camp
LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore slotback Tim Maypray (Madisonville , Ky.) scored on an eight-yard end run to highlight VMI’s football scrimmage held Thursday at Alumni Memorial Field at Foster Stadium.
The scrimmage, VMI’s last of the preseason camp, lasted approximately an hour and 20 minutes and consisted of 12 possessions and 65 plays.

VMI Football Adds Two Assistant Coaches
LEXINGTON, Va.- VMI Football has added two new assistant coaches for the upcoming 2007 season.
Head coach Jim Reid announced that former University of Richmond defensive standout Winston October will coach the defensive backs while former VMI tight end Greg Harris '97 will be an assistant defensive line coach and will work with defensive ends.

Football Camp Update - Friday Practice Schedule Changed
LEXINGTON, Va. - The VMI football practice schedule for Friday, August 17 was altered with a previously scheduled night time scrimmage (7:30 p.m.) cancelled and replaced with two practice sessions on that day. The practices will take place at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Delaney Field.
There will not be a scrimmage held.

VMI Football Holds First Scrimmage of ‘07 Preseason
LEXINGTON, Va. – Taking advantage of a break from the searing temperatures that have hovered over most of preseason camp, the VMI football team scrimmaged for the first time Tuesday afternoon and held a productive session at Delaney Field, according to head coach Jim Reid.
“I was absolutely delighted,” said Reid. “We played base defense and we played good, hard physical defensive football which we need to this year in order to compete. We had excellent third down offense."

Brown Named To Big South Preseason Football Squad
CONCORD, N.C. – VMI offensive guard Robert Brown (Glen Heights, Tex./West Mesquite H.S.) was named to the 2007 Big South preseason All-Conference team as announced Friday as part of the Kickoff Media Luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Concord, N.C.
Brown, who was a second team All-Conference OL selection for the 2006 season, is the most experienced offensive lineman returning to the Keydet squad this fall with 26 career starts including 25 straight starting assignments. Brown will return to anchor the left guard spot.

VMI Football Camp Is Big Success
LEXINGTON, Va. - VMI Football's summer camp held July 15 turned out to be a big success with close to 200 campers turning out for the activities on a hot summer afternoon at Delaney Field. The campers arrived for registration at noon, then started drills an hour later and continued until 5 p.m.
"We were extremely pleased with the turnout for our one day camp," said VMI head coach Jim Reid.

VMI Wins 2006-07 Big South Conference Institutional Sportsmanship Award
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Virginia Military Institute has been named the winner of the Big South Conference’s Institutional Sportsmanship Award for the 2006-07 athletic season, it was announced today by the League office. VMI receives the honor for the second consecutive year, as the Keydets won the inaugural award last season.
The team awards were voted on by Big South student-athletes following each Conference championship. VMI, which was honored with four team sportsmanship awards in 2006-07, was tops among the Big South membership.

NCAA Declares VMI Basketball Statistical Champions in Six Categories
LEXINGTON, Va. – The NCAA in early May made official what VMI hoops fans had known for a long time. VMI was statistically ranked no. 1 in the nation in several categories for the 2006-07 season.
VMI was declared the 2006-07 stat champion in four team categories and two individual categories that included producing both the nation's leading scoring team and the nation's leading scorer. “I am very proud of our guys,” said head coach Duggar Baucom. “Playing together as a team and with a lot heart they accomplished some very memorable feats this year."

Kenon Signs With VMI Basketball
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom has completed his 2007-08 recruiting class with the signing of guard Austin Kenon. Baucom made the announcement Wednesday.
Kenon, a 5-11, combo guard from First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach, Va., averaged 17.6 points and 4.2 rebounds his senior season while shooting 41% from 3-point range and 85% from the free throw line. "We are very excited Austin has decided to attend VMI next year,” said Baucom. “He is a scoring combo guard who can really shoot the three, but can also lead the team from the point guard position.

Mizzer To Attend Detroit Lions Mini-Camp
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI’s Sean Mizzer, who led the Big South Conference in rushing his senior season, will participate in the Detroit Lions mini-camp for rookies to be held May 3-6. VMI head coach Jim Reid made the announcement Tuesday.
Mizzer, who graduated from VMI in December, 2006, will report to the Lions practice facility on Thursday for physicals and will practice twice with the Lions Friday and Saturday and once Sunday before flying back to his Prince Frederick, Md. home.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity and I intend to do the best that I can,” Mizzer said by phone Tuesday.

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom today announced the signing of Hunter Houston to a national letter-of-intent to attend the Institute on a basketball scholarship.
Houston, a 6-6, 205, guard/forward, averaged 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last season for Class 6A Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham, Alabama. He also averaged 3.5 assists and 2.5 blocks while shooting 40% from 3-point range. "Hunter brings us toughness and athleticism. He is a lefty who has an excellent 3-point shot with great range and will also battle on the boards," said Baucom.

Reggie Williams Declares Early For NBA Draft
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI junior forward Reggie Williams, who led Division I in scoring for the 2006-07 season, will declare for the 2007 NBA draft as an early entry.
The deadline for declaring as an early entry is 11:59 ET, April 29th.
Williams intends to test the draft waters without hiring an agent as he evaluates his prospects for the upcoming draft. He has the option of changing his mind and returning for his senior season at VMI if he withdraws his name before the June 18 deadline. The 2007 NBA Draft will take place June 28 in New York City.

AUBURN, Ala.– A three-run eighth inning gave VMI the lead for good, as sophomore closer Kevin Crum came on to record his tenth save of the season as the 30th-ranked Keydets, playing their first game in program history as a nationally-ranked club, defeated the highest-ranked opponent in school history by a 7-3 count on Tuesday evening at Plainsman Park. The team’s eighth-straight win improves on the school’s best start at 13-3, while the 10th-ranked Tigers fall to 17-3.

Keydets Crash Record Books Again; Pound CSU, 116-83
LEXINGTON, Va.- Behind 21 three-point field goals, VMI busted out of a three-game skid in record fashion and secured its first conference win of the year by overwhelming Charleston Southern, 116-83, Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 3,353 at Cameron Hall.
Four school records, one Cameron Hall record, and five Big South records fell on the afternoon as VMI, the nation's leading scoring team, improved to 7-11 and 1-2 in the BSC. Junior forward Reggie Williams scored 37 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while senior guard Fred Robinson hit a school-record nine three-pointers in a career-high 31-point outing.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Junior forward Reggie Williams (Prince George, Va.) has been named Big South Choice Hotel's Big South Men's Player of the Week for games played over the two-week period of Dec. 18-Jan. 1.
It marked the second time this season that Williams has earned the award. He shared the honor for his play during the week ending in November 21.

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Freshman quarterback Kyle Hughes (Williamsburg, Va./ Lafayette H.S.) was named Choice Hotels Big South Freshman of the Week for his play in last Saturday’s season finale against Liberty.

LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior forward Reggie Williams scored a school record 45 points and VMI tallied a school and Big South single-game record 156 points in a 156-95 win over Virginia Intermont Wednesday night at Cameron Hall.
Twenty-four school records were broken on the night including points in a half (78), steals in a game (35), assists (39), three-pointers in a game (21), and highest margin of victory (61 points).

Rochester, a 5-10, 210-pounder from Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas, holds a 4.0 GPA in Economics and Business. He becomes the first VMI football player to make an Academic All-District squad since placekicker Matt Sharpe ’04 was named to the team in 2003.

The four signees are 6-7 forward Quinn Brownfield (Austin, Tex./ Anderson H.S.), 6-2, 175 guard Christian Hunter (Cleveland, Ohio/ Kenston H.S.), 6-6, 196 forward Travis Mosley (Austin, Tex./ Lake Travis H.S.), and 7-0, 240 center Stephen Sargent (Atlanta, Ga./ Whitewater H.S.).
“We are very excited about the signing of Christian, Quinn, Stephen, and Travis, and we are happy that they are now all part of the VMI Basketball family," said Baucom. “They are all very good players who can come in and contribute immediately, but more importantly they are all terrific people who will do very well as cadet-athletes at VMI.

VMI Basketball To Play Two Exhibitions
LEXINGTON, Va.- VMI basketball will open 2006-07 competition in the coming week with two exhibitions slated for Cameron Hall.
The Keydets will play Emory & Henry of the ODAC on Friday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m., then take on another ODAC team, Washington & Lee on Monday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Cameron Hall.

Kelly Named Big South Freshman of the Week
LEXINGTON, Va. – Freshman defensive back Christian Kelly (Centreville, Va./ Fork Union) became the third straight VMI player to win Choice Hotel Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honors after the league office announced the awards Monday in Charlotte.
Kelly was cited for his exceptional play against Charleston Southern October 21 when he picked off three passes off the arm of CSU quarterback and preseason player of the year Collin Drafts.

Maypray Picked As Big South Freshman of the Week Again
LEXINGTON, Va. –Freshman slot back Tim Maypray earned conference honors for the second straight week and was named Choice Hotels Big South Freshman of the Week for his play against Coastal Carolina October 14 in Lexington. The announcement was made by the conference office on Monday.
Maypray earned his second consecutive freshman honor after posting 132 all-purpose yards against the Chanticleers.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- In what will be the opening of a busy weekend in Lexington, VMI lacrosse is hosting the first ever alumni game of the program's new coaching staff. Maypray Tabbed As BSC Freshman of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Freshman slot back Tim Maypray was named as Choice Hotels Big South Conference Freshman of the Week for games played October 7.
Maypray, a freshman who played scholastically at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va., tallied 62 all-purpose yards Saturday at Army on nine touches for an average of 6.9 yards per touch.

2006-07 VMI Basketball Schedule Finalized
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Basketball will play in two regular season tournaments in 2006-07 and will open the season against Ohio State in the Sportstime Ohio BCA Classic on Friday November 10, in Columbus Ohio. The 2006-07 schedule was announced Monday.“This year’s schedule should be both exciting and challenging,” said head coach Duggar Baucom. “We’ll be playing two Big Ten teams, we renew a rival series with Richmond, and we make a return trip to West Point to play Army. We are also playing in two tournaments this year. I think we have put together a competitive pre-season schedule which will help prepare us for the Big South.”

LEXINGTON, Va. – ESPN, Inc., and the Army Athletic Association have announced that the VMI-Army football game Oct. 7 at West Point, N.Y. will begin at 1:00 p.m. with kickoff slated at 1:05 p.m.

VMI Football Stadium To Be Dedicated This Weekend
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Football’s refurbished stadium will be formally dedicated in weekend ceremonies to be held in conjunction with the VMI-James Madison football game and Reunion weekend.
The facility, known as Alumni Memorial Field which underwent nearly $15 million dollars of improvements over the past year, will be officially renamed Foster Stadium in honor of P. Wesley Foster, Jr., a 1956 graduate of the Institute who provided generous financial support for the project. Follow the action via livestats, or listen to the VMI Sports Network broadcast.

VMI Basketball To Play In Sportstime Ohio BCA Classic
LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI will open its 2006-07 basketball season against top-flight national competition in the Sportstime Ohio Black Coaches Association Classic basketball tournament hosted by Ohio State University November 10-12.
VMI will face host Ohio State on Friday, November 10 in the first night of action. Other teams in the tournament include Alabama A&M, IUPUI, Kent State, Loyola of Chicago, Princeton and South Dakota State.

Walton Honored Nationally By Don Hansen's
LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior cornerback Jamaal Walton (Va. Beach, Va.) was honored nationally this week by being named a I-AA Defensive Player of the Week by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette for his play against Norfolk State.
Walton returning to his hometown area of Virginia Beach (Tallwood High School) blocked two extra points and led VMI in tackles with 15 with two pass breakups against the Spartans.
