LEXINGTON, Va. - The visiting Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb used a balanced attack in the opening half to open a 3-0 lead and eventual 5-0 victory over the VMI men's soccer team Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.
Led by Magnus Moldjord's seven shots, the Bulldogs utilized a 24-6 shot attempt ratio to stay aggressive in the offensive third and maintain possession as the Keydets struggled to obtain shot opportunities. GWU's Oskar Wang scored the first goal for the Bulldogs at the 23:02 mark before Moldjord added a security goal 32 seconds later. Gardner-Webb would go on to add one more before the half and two additional goals in the final 20 minutes.
The Keydets nearly scored a goal in the second half when a David Wright shot attempt was deflected by Bulldog keeper Jacob Beyer and kept out of the net. Freshman Pa-Alieu Ann led the Keydets with two shot attempts while Cooper Duplantis, Sam Moffatt and Jonathan Martinez also took shots at the net.
VMI goalie Jon Harrington surrendered the three goals in the opening half to pick up the loss before being replaced by junior Robert Allen for the second half. Allen registered a season-high nine saves in the final 45 minutes as Gardner-Webb continued to press.
The Keydets return to the pitch for the final non-conference game of the season as they host Howard Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Patchin Field.
