BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The VMI water polo team again split a day of competition at the Indiana Classic as the Keydets fell to the host No. 10 Hoosiers by a close 14-9 score before defeating Cal Lutheran by an 11-8 count Sunday in Bloomington, Indiana.
Facing Indiana early in the morning, the Keydets (7-2) fought hard against the nationally ranked Hoosiers but could not keep pace as Indiana scored five goals in the opening quarter and six in the third quarter to build a 13-6 lead with one period remaining. The Keydets outscored Indiana three goals to one in the final eight minutes but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
Senior Shelby Barkley led the team with four goals while Emma Perez and Sarah Dolitsky both logged two. Emma Noble tacked on the other for VMI’s total. VMI keeper Isabel French registered six saves in the loss.
The Hoosiers were led by five goals from Juli Hilovsky while Sarah Myers, Megan Abarta and Sarah Young each tallied a pair of scores.

The Keydets jumped on the Regals early on with a 3-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and never gave up the advantage despite Cal Lutheran’s best efforts to rally from behind.
Ahead 6-4 at the half, the Keydets rallied for five goals to CLU’s two to break away for the win. VMI was led by three goals from Natalie Rivas and Dolitsky while Sophia DelBondio added two. Barkley, Noble and Rebecca Serrano put in the other scores for the Keydets.
