Water Polo Returns to Action at Indiana Classic

LEXINGTON, Va. – After a two-week layoff, the 5-0 VMI water polo team looks to continue its season-opening win streak against difficult competition this weekend at the Indiana Classic in Bloomington, Indiana. All matches will occur at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

The Keydets will face Mercyhurst at 1:45 p.m. Saturday before facing No. 13 Hartwick at 5:30 p.m. that day. On Sunday VMI will face No. 10-ranked host Indiana before concluding the invitational at 2:15 p.m. against traditional power Cal Lutheran.

After she scored 25 goals to open the season two weeks ago, VMI senior center Shelby Barkley will lead the attack. Seniors Haley Scott and Natalie Rivas each contributed nine goals apiece at the tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania, while junior Sarah Dolitsky logged eight goals.

Emma Perez, Caroline Wojtas and Rivas have each registered four assists to lead the Keydets in facilitating the offense. Barkley also leads the team in steals (8), blocks (10) and drawn exclusions (20).

In the cage sophomore keeper Isabel French had a strong start to the season by tallying 46 saves in addition to a steal and three assists in over 130 minutes of play.
