LEXINGTON, Va. – Six months after the program’s best season to date, VMI women’s water polo head coach Ryan Pryor announced his team’s 2018 schedule Thursday morning.
The 2017 Keydets finished the year with a 22-8 overall record, including an 11-3 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, in a season highlighted by entering the Top 25 poll and defeating MAAC opponents Iona and Marist for the first time. The 2018 team looks to build on those accomplishments and more in the upcoming campaign.
“I’m very pleased with the way the schedule came together this year,” Pryor said. “We’ll have an opportunity to go to some new tournaments and face opponents we haven’t faced in the past. That includes a trip to the University of Indiana, which will be beneficial not only from a competitive standpoint but also will present a great opportunity for many families from the Midwest to see the team in action.”
The Keydets open the year at Washington and Jefferson on Feb. 16 a day before participating in the Laker Invitational hosted by Mercyhurst College. Two weeks later, the team will head to Bloomington, Indiana, to face Mercyhurst, Hartwick and traditional Top 20 opponents Indiana and Cal Lutheran.
Conference play begins a week sooner than it has in the past when the Keydets face Iona on March 10 in Loudonville, New York, hosted by Siena. VMI will also face La Salle, St. Francis and a Top 20 Wagner team that weekend.
Fans will have only one opportunity to see the Keydets at Clark King Pool on Saturday, March 17 when VMI plays host to Gannon (10 a.m.) and George Washington (6 p.m.)
“I’m excited to host two home games on March 17,” Pryor said. “Gannon will be coming down for the first time in a few years and I look forward to continuing our annual series with George Washington in front of the home crowd—the corps has always provided us with a tremendous atmosphere for our home games.”
After a March 24-25 MAAC weekend up in New Rochelle, New York, the Keydets will head out on their annual Spring Furlough trip to California from March 26-30. VMI will face Whittier, UC Santa Barbara, Redlands, Occidental and La Verne during their time out west.
“Our California swing will fall at a different juncture in the season than in previous years because of the way our spring break timing and the new MAAC schedule mesh together,” Pryor said. “We head out to California exactly halfway through our league schedule, which I believe will give us a great opportunity to make adjustments against non-conference opponents and be prepared for the home stretch within the league.”
Following two consecutive MAAC weekends, the league tournament will take place April 28-29 at the McCann Natatorium hosted by Marist in Poughkeepsie, New York.
