Pryor Announces 2017 Water Polo Recruiting Class

LEXINGTON, Va. – Coming off his third season at the helm of the program, VMI water polo head coach Ryan Pryor announced his 2017 recruiting class Monday afternoon.

Joining the program are incoming freshmen Amber Hamil (Lakewood, Wash.), McKenna Imset (Whittier, Calif.), Andrea Potgieter (Chicago, Ill.) and Zoe Salafatinos (Naperville, Ill.)

The foursome joins a VMI program coming off its best season of its six-year existence and featured many personal and team achievements, including qualifying for the MAAC Tournament for the first time and receiving its first Top 25 ranking in program history.

Below is a synopsis of the 2017 VMI water polo recruiting class:


Amber Hamil – Lakes High School – Lakewood, Wash.
High School: Coached by Madelyn Tallon at Lakes HS in Lakewood, Wash. … lettered in water polo all four years in addition to three years on the swim team … received OIA second team honors … played multiple positions in water polo … also competed in club water polo for Puget Sound Polo … member of the honor roll.

Personal: Daughter of Mark and Susan Hamil … has one sister … plans to major in economics and business.

Coach Pryor Commentary:
“As a left-handed attacker, Amber will help to provide balance to the offense with her play on the right side of the pool. Her intelligence and scoring ability will be assets for us right away and her attitude and work ethic will allow her to continue to progress throughout her collegiate career.”

McKenna Imset – California High School – Whittier, Calif.
High School: Prepped at California HS in Whittier, Calif. … four-year letterwinner in varsity water polo … played the whole set of positions as a utility … named team captain as a senior and was the team MVP all four years … named first team All-League all four years … tallied 397 career goals, including 132 as a senior … first freshman at the school to earn All-CIF honors … owns school records for career goals (achieved as a junior), most goals in a single match and most goals in a season (132) … also played club polo for Fullerton Hills water polo club and Huntington Beach water polo club … MVP of the Junior Olympics team in 2015, helping team to a silver medal in the Gold Division … named to USA Water Polo All-Academic team following the 2015-16 season … honor roll member.

Personal: Daughter of Wayne and Deyanira Imset … has three older siblings … sister, Kaylen, played water polo at Fullerton College … plans on majoring in biology.

Coach Pryor Commentary:
“I expect McKenna to make an immediate impact at the center position. She is a highly experienced player and a prolific goal scorer. Her knowledge and skillset will translate to the college game very well and I look forward to working with her.”

Andrea Potgieter – Barrington High School – Chicago, Ill.
High School: Prepped at Barrington HS in Chicago, Ill. … named third team All-State as a senior … played the whole set as a four-year member of the water polo team … during her tenure with the program was named both the Most Improved Player and team MVP … owns the team record for goals in a season … also ran cross country for four years and played basketball for two seasons … played club polo for the Northern Illinois Polo Club.

Personal: Daughter of Adrian and Lisa Potgieter … older brother Christiaan is a member of the VMI swimming and diving team … plans to major in chemistry, physics and astronomy.

“Andrea is just scratching the surface of how good she can be. She can play multiple positions, has great physical strength, and was a dominant goal scorer at the high school level. I look forward to her bringing these skills to our team and expanding her game over the next four years.”


Zoe Salafatinos – Neuqua Valley High School – Naperville, Ill.
High School: Coached by Cara Stack at Neuqua Valley HS in Naperville, Ill. … named to the 2016 and 2017 All-Illpolo teams … four-year varsity member as a utility player … all-conference recipient … named the school's Athlete of the Season in 2016 … received an IHSA academic award in both water polo and swimming … named both a Baller and Super Baller by IllPolo … also a four-year member of the swim team … played club polo for West Suburban Water Polo Club and was a member of the Maverick Club swim team.

Personal: Daughter of Victor Salafatinos and Constance Mika … father, Victor, played professional basketball in Greece … has three siblings … high school teammate of current VMI goalie Isabel French ... plans to major in economics and business.

“Zoe has a combination of elite size, strength, and speed which will allow her to excel in college. She has a great sense for the game both offensively and defensively. She will also bring versatility, with the ability to play multiple positions."
