ORANGE, Calif. – Competing in the first of five matches in California over Spring Furlough, the VMI water polo team earned a 14-11 victory over host Chapman Monday afternoon in Orange, California.
With the score tied after the opening period, the Keydets took the lead in the second quarter with the help of junior Shelby Barkley to claim an 8-5 advantage going into halftime.
VMI registered two goals in the third period, and a late Chapman goal brought the score to 11-9 heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter, but the Keydets sealed the victory with three goals of their own.
Barkley finished the match with four goals to lead the team while Cecilya Lundy, Bailey Huddleston, Natalie Rivas and Sarah Dolitsky all scored two apiece. Sophia DelBondio and Emma Noble also notched goals for the Keydets.
VMI goalie Isabel French played the entire 32 minutes and logged six saves to go with two steals to secure the win.
The Keydets continue their trip with two matches slated for Tuesday in Redlands, California. VMI will face Concordia Irvine in a neutral matchup at 3 p.m. before taking on host Redlands at 6 p.m. PDT.
