LEXINGTON, Va. – In its final competition before the SoCon Championships, the VMI rifle teams performed well in the NCAA Sectional Qualifier against North Georgia Saturday at Kilbourne Hall.

North Georgia came in first place overall with 4619 aggregate points (2296 smallbore, 2323 air rifle) and was trailed by the VMI men’s team with 4481 points (2218 smallbore, 2263 air). The VMI women placed third with 4412 points (2164 smallbore, 2248 air).

VMI senior John Pitman finished in the Top 10 overall with 1143 points (566 SB, 477 AR) for fifth overall and was trailed immediately by women’s team junior Kelia Aardema in sixth place (1131 points). Hunter Jacob came in eighth place with 1126 points (567 SB, 559 AR) and Nick Reynolds placed 10^th in the field with 1103 points (541 SB, 562 AR).

Aardema was awarded the silver medal in the Smallbore ROTC rankings for her 570 score. In the Air Force ROTC air rifle competition, Pitman was given the silver medal with his 577 score while VMI women’s freshman Samantha Reid earned the bronze medal with a 568 air rifle tally.

The Keydets will compete in two weeks at the Southern Conference Championships March 2-3 hosted by Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia.
