LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to finish the 2017-18 regular season on a strong note, the VMI rifle teams fell to SoCon foe North Georgia in an NCAA Qualifier match Saturday at Kilbourne Hall in Lexington, Virginia.
The Nighthawks earned the win with 4593 aggregate points by way of a 2261 smallbore tally and a 2332 in the air rifle competition. The Keydet mixed rifle team came in second with 4481 points (2208 smallbore, 2273 air rifle) and the VMI women placed third with a combined score of 4438 (2170 smallbore, 2268 air rifle).
John Pitman led the way for the mixed team in the smallbore competition by shooting a 561 and was trailed by Samantha Alexander’s 559. William Davidson (550) and Nick Reynolds (538) also scored team points in the segment while freshmen Ben Doehler, Joohyuk Lee and Cole Shenk all participated.
Sophomore William Davidson led the Keydet mixed team in the air rifle portion by way of his 575 scored and was trailed closely by Hunter Jacob’s 571. Nick Reynolds (565) and Samantha Alexander (562) also earned team points in the competition.
In the women’s smallbore, sophomore Kelia Aardema came in first for the Keydets with 557 points followed by Katherine Watson’s 546. Loyce Lightfoot (543) and Jamie Foster (524) scored team points while senior Joelle Henry shot a 510 to round out the women’s team smallbore shooters.
Senior Katherine Watson paced the Keydet women in the air rifle with her combined score of 571 and Kaitlyn Morrison registered a 569. Kerrie Lightfoot (567), Sabrina Bell (561) and Jamie Foster (541) also shot the air rifle.
The Southern Conference Rifle Championships are slated for March 3-4 hosted by The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
