LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking for a strong start to the 2018-19 season, the VMI rifle teams were defeated by The Citadel in the season opener for both programs Saturday morning at Kilbourne Hall in Lexington, Virginia.
The Citadel men’s team won the match with an aggregate score of 4525 with the VMI mixed team scoring a 4421. The VMI women’s team shot a 4301 for third place in the contest.
Senior John Pitman led the VMI mixed team with a smallbore rifle score of 561 for second place overall while teammates Jacob Lagace (5th, 547) and Nick Reynolds (6th, 545) finished close behind. Hunter Jacob and William Davidson also scored for the Keydets with respective 7th and 8th place tallies of 544 and 543.
On the women’s team, junior Kelia Aardema led the Keydets with a ninth place finish with 540 points while Sabrina Bell (11th, 537) and Jamie Foster (15th, 509) were close behind for the top scores on the women’s side.
In the air rifle competition, Bell led all VMI competitors with a 568 and Jacob led the mixed team with a 562. Aardema finished second on the women’s team with a 562 while Chris Milliken of the mixed team placed second on his squad with a 558.

The Keydet rifle teams return to competition next Saturday with a match against the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
