LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI head coach women’s soccer coach Bryan Williams has announced that Angela Redmond and Sarah Strand will serve as team captains for the upcoming 2010 fall season.

Redmond (Fairfax Station, Va./Woodson) is a senior goalkeeper that enjoyed a career year last season, leading the Big South Conference with a 0.81 goals-against-average while ranking fourth nationally in save percentage (89.3%).  She was voted to the All-State Second Team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) in November and ranks as the career leader in save percentage, goals-against-average, shutouts and wins in program history.

Strand (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) is a junior midfielder that has started 39 games over the past two seasons.  Serving primarily as the team’s defensive midfielder, she has played a key role in helping the team to its best defensive seasons on record, while also generating offense, as evidenced by a pair of goals scored against Big South foes last season.  She earned Second Team All-Conference honors last season after being named to the league’s All-Freshman team in 2008.

“I am very proud to announce this year's captains as Angela Redmond and Sarah Strand,” said Williams.  “I feel that both of these young ladies have already represented VMI Women’s Soccer to the best of their ability throughout their careers, with Angela receiving All-State honors for her success last fall and Sarah having been selected Second Team All-Conference and being the focus of our midfield the last two seasons.  I look forward to the upcoming campaign with Angela and Sarah leading the way.”

The Keydets expect to return 12 letter winners from last year’s squad that posted a winning record in Big South play for the second year in a row.  The team also advanced to the Conference Semifinals last year for the second consecutive season, falling in penalty kicks.
