LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI women’s soccer program announced its 2018 incoming class on Monday, a class that consists of nine athletes from six different states, all while also including the program’s first signee from Lexington.

“We’re very pleased with this recruiting class,” said VMI head coach Chris Bergmann. “These nine players will add depth all over the field and will create competition in practice. We believe many of them can contribute quickly and help us as we continue to build upon last year's historic season.”

Sarah Anschultz, M, Littleton, Co./D'Evelyn HS (Colorado Rush DA)

High School/Personal: 4A state champion, Academic All-State and First Team All-State in 2017...two-year captain of Colorado Rush DA...2014 international Adidas training camp...2013 ODP, state team and regional camp invite...played in CO All-State high school contest...twin sister Carolyn will play at Wisconsin...platinum honor roll...intends to major in business and economics.

Coach's Quote: "Sarah is a dynamic, cerebral central midfielder, who has an amazing work rate and can be a true box-to-box midfielder. She has a wonderful understanding of the game of soccer and can help set the team’s tempo and raise our level of possession. Sarah is a special player that can help dictate the pace of the game both offensively and defensively. We believe she has outstanding leadership qualities and will look to sharpen those around her."

Gabby Criscione, D, Powhatan, Va./Powhatan (Richmond United ECNL)

High School/Personal: Four-year letterwinner at Powhatan HS...All-State and All-Conference...Richmond United ECNL club team, competed in ECNL Champions League finals...VA State ODP...Jefferson Cup Finalist...selected to Richmond Strikers semi-pro WPSL team in 2017...chosen to Richmond Strikers semi-pro CCL Pro23 in 2018...advanced college academy...honor roll all four gifted student...had two uncles play pro baseball, father played at Longwood...mother played soccer at VCU...intends to major in biology.

Coach's Quote: “Gabby is a tenacious defender who is very dynamic on the field. She has a great ability to attack from the back line. This will allow us to have more creative options on the offensive side of the ball. She has great speed and solid one-v- one defensive skills. Gabby is a fearless defender who will never back down and will fight for the valuable space. She is coming off a great season with Richmond United ECNL, where she has been a staple in their backline. Gabby will be an impact player right away.”

Whitney Edwards-Roberson, M/F, Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield (Richmond United ECNL)

High School/Personal: Four-year letterwinner at Grassfield, where she earned First Team All-State, region, district and conference honors and was a past conference player of the year...two-time team captain...also played for Richmond United ECNL and Hampton Roads Strikers...Virginia ODP...honor roll...National Honor played tennis at Norfolk State...intends to major in biology.

Coach's Quote: "Whitney has the speed and athleticism to be an impact player for VMI right away. She is a strong attacking player, who can play both central and on the flanks, and she is coming off an excellent ECNL season scoring goals and sharpening all the players around her. Whitney is a selfless player who looks to make her teammates better every day.”

Emily Grant, D/M, Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic (Tampa Bay United ECNL)

High School/Personal: Lettered two years at Tampa Catholic, where she earned all-district honors...Tampa Bay United ECNL, Virginia Soccer Association and Brandon Youth FC (England)...Norwich Elite Player Development Center (2014)...honor roll...intends to major in economics and business.

Coach's Quote: “Emily is a great fit for VMI. She is going to be commissioning into the Marines and has the leadership and strong mental toughness we are looking for in our program. She is having a tremendous senior season on the Tampa Bay ECNL team, and can play anywhere on the field. Emily is a strong player with excellent passing skills, who has wonderful vision on the field and a very high soccer IQ. She has international experience as well playing in England.”

Jessi Harmon, D/M, Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff (Sereno SC)

High School/Personal: Four-year letterwinner at two different schools during her high school career…also played for Sereno Soccer Club and Flagstaff Soccer Club...2015-16 coaches’ award…also lettered in football, where she was the first female player to score in consecutive games (kicker), and in cross country…was only female varsity football player…also took part in club mountain biking…AP Academy Student of Music…attending VMI on a four-year USMC Scholarship…brother Levi played three years for the VMI men’s soccer program…intends to major in international studies.

Coach’s Quote: “Jessi is an outstanding athlete. She has a great understanding of the game and has tremendous communication skills. She can play as a central defender or in the midfield. Jessi has excellent vision and a tremendous fight on the field. She has a team-first mentality that is contagious to those around her. She also has great leadership skills both on and off the field.”

Erin Koslowski, M, Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam (Beach FC)

High School/Personal: Four-year letterwinner at Kellam, where she earned First Team All-Conference and All-Region honors...Second Team captain of Beach FC for four years...VA state ODP...4.0 academic award (2015)...intends to major in biology.

Coach's Quote: "Erin is an excellent central midfielder who will have the ability to play in several spots in our system. She has tremendous vision and excellent passing ability. Erin has a fantastic work ethic and fights for the ball. She is coming off a great season with Beach FC, where she has been instrumental in her team’s success. She is a wonderful teammate who always looks for the best options to benefit those around her."

Ana Lawrence, D/M, Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport HS (Empire United DA)

High School/Personal: Three-year letterwinner at Spencerport, where she played on a two-time state set school record for most shutouts and fewest goals allowed...honorable mention for James E. Magin award...also played for Empire United Development Academy...National Honor Society...intends to major in psychology.

Coach's Quote: “Ana is a strong, tough defensive-minded player. She has a great ability to win the ball and has the size and athleticism to compete right away. She is great at one-on-one marking and has a tremendous physical fight to compete for every ball. Ana has a great drive for fitness and always wants to excel and push those around her. She is having a solid year playing for the Empire Developmental Academy.”

Madison Player, GK, Sumter, S.C./Westover Academy (Danville CC) (NC Fusion ECNL)

High School/Personal: Lettered two years at Westover Academy, earning honorable mention all-state honors in her second...South Carolina United Football Club (SCUFC 97)...won state cup twice and finished second another won 2014 Disney Showcase...also played in the WPSL for the Carolina Lady Dynamo...member of Blackforce MMA for four years...Naval ROTC...intends to major in psychology.

Coach's Quote: “Madison is a solid goalkeeper. She has great shot-blocking ability and is a solid presence in the box. Madison has played at a very high-level, which will bring a highly competitive bite to our team. She is a team player and wants to make those around her better every day.”

Maria Vargas, M/F, Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County (SOCA)

High School/Personal: Four-year letterwinner at Rockbridge County HS...believed to be first player in program history from Lexington...2017 Blue Ridge District Player of the Year and First Team All-State...named all-conference and all-region each of her first three seasons...also lettered three years in basketball, playing for former VMI men's basketball coach and administrator Bart Bellairs, and a year in swimming...holds Rockbridge County school record in goals scored and was tied for the school record in assists entering her final one of only two players in school history with over 100 career points, and had 58 more than any other player with one season of eligibility left...National Honor Society...President of Spanish Honor Society...Project Connection Core Team Member...father played collegiate soccer and grandfather played professionally in Columbia.
