Keydets to Face WCU to Close Out Regular Season

VMI basketball closes out the 2016-17 regular season with the finale of a two-game road swing Monday night against Western Carolina at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen live – with participating provider - on ESPN3/WatchESPN and the ESPN app. In addition, an audio broadcast can be heard in the Lexington area on 96.7 3WZ with accompanying feed on Live stats will also be available.

Last Meeting with Western Carolina (1/12/2017):

In a game that featured seven ties and 18 lead changes, Keith Smith blocked a potential go-ahead three-pointer as time expired and the VMI Keydets defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts, 79-78, in SoCon basketball action at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. In the victory, VMI (4-11, 1-3) saw Chapman post 18 points while QJ Peterson had his second consecutive double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds. Smith added 13 and five boards, while Julian Eleby chipped in 14 markers.

Last Time Out - at UNCG (2/25/2017):

UNCG senior center R.J. White scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Spartans held off a VMI challenge and posted a Southern Conference 74-67 win over VMI Saturday night at Fleming Gym. The Keydets were led in scoring by senior guard QJ Peterson who scored 22 points with 19 coming in the first half. Senior forward Trey Chapman scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds and sophomore guard Adrian Rich added 12 points.

A VMI win against Western Carolina would:

Give VMI a season sweep of the WCU series – their first of a SoCon foe this year and first over the Catamounts since the 1998-99 season.

Assure the Keydets a spot in the 8/9 first round game of the SoCon tournament.

Give VMI its first win in Cullowhee since the 2014-15 season.

Tiebreaker Scenarios: 

VMI, Western Carolina and The Citadel all enter Monday’s action with identical 3-14 SoCon records. Here are the tiebreaking scenarios regarding the 8-10 seeds for next week’s SoCon Tournament.

If VMI/The Citadel are tied at 4-14, then higher seed goes to The Citadel (split season series, both would have a win over UTC, but CIT has a win over WOF).
If WCU/The Citadel are tied at 4-14, higher seed goes to WCU via a season sweep.
If VMI/The Citadel are tied at 3-15 then higher seed goes to VMI (split season series, CIT will have lost to UTC twice, VMI has a UTC win).
If WCU/The Citadel are tied at 3-15, then higher seed goes to WCU via a season sweep.
