LEXINGTON, Va. - Stephen Robarge of lacrosse and James Goodwillie of swimming and diving have been named VMI Athletes of the Week, for the time period ending Feb. 23.
Robarge (Lorton, Va./Hayfield HS) has emerged as a true force in the first two games of his sophomore season. After going 15 for 21 in face-offs during the season opener, he won 16 of 19 in the game against Army and nearly led the Keydets to an upset victory. Robarge is now 31 for 40 at the face-off X this season, for an impressive success rate of 77.5%. For his efforts, the sophomore was tabbed 2010's first MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday evening.
Goodwillie (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) became VMI's first-ever podium finisher at the CCSA Championships, placing third in the 400 individual medley. In the final, Goodwillie swam a 4:08.89, which would have set a new school record in the event if he hadn't broken the mark in the prelims with a 4:08.75. The sophomore also broke his own school records in the 200 back (1:54.87) and the 200 IM (1:56.33), and placed fifth and 11th in the two events, respectively. In addition, he swam on VMI's 400 free relay that placed fourth and the 400 medley relay that placed fifth, helping the Keydets to a fourth-place team finish, matching the program's best finish since joining the CCSA.
VMI lacrosse will return to action Saturday, as the Keydets play host to the Dolphins of Jacksonville University. Game time at the VMI Turf Field is set for 1 p.m.
