Richards takes Fifth at SouthEast Open
ROANOKE, Va. – The VMI wrestling team opened the 2019-20 season Sunday at the Southeast Open, and red-shirt senior Neal Richards finished in fifth place in the Open bracket at 174 pounds.
Richards, the 2018-19 Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year and a national qualifier, won four of his five matches Sunday at the Berglund Center. He defeated Clay Lautt from the University of North Carolina twice on the day, including 5-2 in the fifth-place match. Richards’ loss was to 10th-ranked Connor Flynn of Missouri 7-2. Red-shirt senior Dom Gallo won a pair of matches at 141.
A number of young Keydets had good performances in the freshmen/sophomore competition. Zach Brown won the title at 197 defeating his opponent in the finals via major decision. He earned three victories en route to the crown. Will Lawrence won twice by sudden victory at 157 and took third. Job Chishko won five-straight matches at 149, two by fall, one by technical fall and one by major decision, to finish fifth. Robbie Adelstein won two matches at 285, Sean McKinney won a match by major decision at 133, and Jon Hoover scored a win at 165.
VMI will head to Washington, D.C. next Saturday to face Maryland and American.
