LEXINGTON, Va. – Facing three opponents in the final home event of the season, the VMI wrestling team earned a 29-9 win over Davidson in the opener but fell to Clarion, 30-12, and Ohio, 37-6, in the finale Saturday at Cormack Hall.

Six senior cadet-athletes Michael Hulcher, Alex Rinehart, Yousuf Malik, Jake Koch, Jake Tomlinson and Taylor Thomas were honored before the first match as their final home event as Keydet wrestlers.

The Keydets claimed seven of 10 bouts in their 29-9 victory over the Wildcats in the opener, surrendering only three losses by decision. The win marked the first career victory for interim head coach Rich Lavorato.

In the lower weights Clifton Conway and Hunter Starner got VMI off to a good start following Conway’s 5-2 decision and Starner’s 13-3 major decision over Zamir Ode to give VMI a 7-0 lead.

At 141 pounds, sophomore Dominic Gallo was taken down in the final moments but swiftly turned it into a reversal with only a few seconds remaining to earn a 5-4 decision over Davidson’s Dustin Runzo. Later, the Keydets claimed three straight wins from Robert DuPont (157), Blake Hohman (165) and Cade Kiely (174) to go up by an insurmountable 25-3 score. Hohman pinned Hunter Costa in just 18 seconds before Kiely pinned Noah Satterfield in one minute to give the Keydets a huge boost.

Senior heavyweight Jake Tomlinson closed the match with an 11-3 major decision over Will Cooley for the final tally of 29-9.

After Conway was pinned to open the match, VMI’s Starner equaled the score at 6-6 by pinning his opponent, Cameron Butler, midway through the second period. Facing the No.7-ranked opponent in the country at 141 pounds in Brock Zacherl, VMI’s Gallo gave a worthy effort but ultimately fell by a 14-4 major decision to give the Golden Eagles a 10-6 lead.

DuPont (157) earned a takedown with only a few seconds left on the board in the third period to claim a 2-1 decision over Avery Shay, but the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 24-9 following three straight wins including Dom Rigous’ 10-0 major over VMI’s Kiely at 174 pounds.

At 197 pounds, VMI’s Max Gallahan claimed an exciting 12-11 victory over Edgar Ruano by tying the score at 11 late in the third period with a takedown. He accumulated just enough riding time during the bout to get the extra point and the individual victory.

Ohio 37, VMI 6
The Keydets ended the day with a 37-6 loss to the Bobcats of Ohio as the visitors took nine of 10 bouts to claim the win. VMI got behind early, 9-0, following an Ohio decision at 125 and No. 14 Cameron Kelly pinning VMI’s Starner in 2:05.

Senior Michael Hulcher put the Keydets back in the match after an exciting pin in just 38 seconds over Trey Grenier of Ohio, but the thrill was short-lived as the Bobcats went on to earn the remaining seven bouts.

The Keydets return to action next Sunday, Jan. 21, when they head to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, to take on host Bloomsburg at noon and Sacred Heart at 2 p.m.
