VMI Swimmers Compete at Day Two of ECACs
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed Saturday on day two of the three-day 2019 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.
The Keydets set several new school and freshman records on the day. Carisa Kunkle, Morgan Davis, Sophie Svoboda and Sarah MacDougall broke the school record in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:51.17. Svoboda broke her own school and freshman records in the 100-butterfly preliminaries, swimming a 55.99. She finished eighth in the finals.
Ryan Cooper swam a 59.43 in the 100-breast prelims to break the varsity and freshman records. The men’s 200-medley relay team of Stephen Hopta, Cooper, Andrew Mills and Zach Emerson finished in 1:36.07 to break the freshman record. Hopta set the new freshman record in the 100-meter back preliminaries, swimming a 51.01 and was seventh in the finals. The 800-free relay team of Thomas Muldowney, Nick Palmieri, Jacob Smilie and Hopta took fourth place.
The Keydets also time trialed the 800-free relay to break the old freshman mark. The team of Hopta, Cooper, Brady Rawers and Emerson finished in 7:10.62.
The event concludes Sunday with a 9 a.m. start.
