ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up the 2018-19 season Sunday at the 2019 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.
Sophie Svoboda set new school and freshman records in the 200-backstroke, breaking both marks in preliminaries and the finals. She finished eighth in the finals with a time of 2:06.18.
Stephen Hopta broke both the VMI and freshman records in the men’s 200 backstroke finals, taking fourth place overall in 1:51.14. Zach Emerson came in eighth in the race in 1:52.75.
The men’s B 400-free relay team of Emerson, Hopta, Anno Kong and Ryan Cooper set a new freshman record by swimming a 3:13.98 in preliminaries. The A team of Ryan Schmitz, Brady Gannon, Jacob Smilie and Emerson placed sixth in 3:07.95 in the finals.
The men finished seventh in a field of 21 teams, and the women were 15th out of 20.
“We had a lot of fun at this meet and throughout the entire season,” said head coach Andrew Bretscher. “We were able to set more records this weekend and see more improvements in many of our athletes, so I couldn’t be happier. Bringing such a large group to this meet brought out a great team atmosphere that certainly contributed to our success both individually and as a team. Our seniors finished off their careers in style, and I’m proud of what they were able to achieve during their time on the team, and how much they have contributed to successes we saw this year. Setting 25 new varsity records and 22 new rat (freshman) records in just one season is a major milestone for the program, so this will be a season to remember.”
