VMI Soccer Begins Post-Season Tuesday at Belmont

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men’s soccer team will begin the post-season Tuesday at Belmont University (Tenn.) in the first round of the 2019 Southern Conference Tournament. The Keydets enter the field as the #7 seed, while the Bruins hold the #6 spot. The Keydets will be looking for revenge after Belmont knocked VMI out of last season’s conference tournament 2-1.

Furman University claimed the bracket’s top spot and will have home-field advantage throughout the tourney. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) comes in as the #2 seed.

VMI freshman Anderson Velazquez scored from from fellow freshman Nadim Lissa but Belmont defeated VMI 3-1 on October 26. Sophomore goalie Broden Schull made seven saves on the day. Jack Shaw scored at the 7:59 mark of the first half for the Bruins and the visitors held a 1-0 lead at intermission. Ares Marlonsson increased the lead to two with a goal at 66:45 from Brett Royster and Niccolo Dagnoni put in the late tally for Belmont.

The winner of the contest moves on to face East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Friday at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals.  

The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.
