Men’s Soccer Hosts Mercer Saturday for Senior Day
LEXINGTON, Va. – Saturday will be a huge day for the VMI men’s soccer program as it honors its three seniors and opens Southern Conference play in a home match against Mercer University at 1 p.m.

The team’s three seniors; Sohrab Shaikh, Miguel Arrate and Jonathan Martinez will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
About the Keydets (1-8-1): Freshman Justin Riescher scored four times to lift VMI to a 4-1 victory over Regent University Tuesday afternoon. All four tallies came in the second half to give the Keydets their first win since September 5, 2014. Fabian Munoz-Velasquez, William Welch and Shaikh had assists on Riescher’s first three goals, the fourth came on a penalty kick.
The Keydets outshot the Royals 31-14 and held a 12-1 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Broden Schull made seven saves. The last time the Keydet offense scored four times in a game was in the 2012 campaign.
About the Bears (6-2-2): Mercer is on a two-game winning streak, besting Presbyterian (3-2) and Georgia Southern (3-1) last week. Trevor Martineau, Kobe Perez and Ricardo Packer, Jr. each scored for Mercer against Georgia Southern, and JR DeRose made seven saves.
For the season, Roberto Arteaga (2g, 6a) and Martineau (4g, 2a) each have 10 points, while Leo Toledo, Jr. has two goals and five helpers. Martineau was named the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week last week, his second such award for the season.
