LEXINGTON, Va. – Coming off their first shutout in three years, the VMI men’s soccer team (0-2-2) heads to New York City with confidence to take on the Manhattan College Jaspers Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
Senior keeper Jon Harrington earned a career-high 10 saves in Saturday’s scoreless draw with Saint Joseph’s, besting his previous high of seven saves from the season-opening tie with Longwood. The shutout was VMI’s first since Sept. 5, 2014, and the first home shutout since Oct. 26, 2013.
Forward David Wright leads the VMI attack and ranked second in the Southern Conference with 16 shot attempts on the year for an average of four per game. Freshman Christopher McGhan has taken seven shots while Richard Quispe, Jessie Zavala and Cooper Duplantis all have three apiece.
The Keydets own a 5-0 record over Manhattan with the last matchup coming 10 years ago in the 2007 campaign.
About the Jaspers (2-2)
Manhattan is in search of its third win of the year to top the two victories earned from 2016. The Jaspers have been particularly tough at home this season as they have yet to allow a goal in two games played at Gaelic Park.
The Jaspers have come out victorious in games against Navy in the season opener and against Sacred Heart back on August 31. Manhattan dropped a match to Fairleigh Dickinson on Aug. 28 and most recently fell to Saint Joseph’s by a 2-1 score in overtime in Philadelphia.
Four different Jaspers have scored one goal apiece on the year including Lucas Da Silva, Noah Amissah, Troy Carrington and Brandon Joseph-Buadi.
Goalie Connor Hayes (1-2) has played the majority of minutes in the box, allowing five goals with 10 saves to his record. Marcellin Gohier has played 67 in the early season and has one save in his 1-0 record.
