LEXINGTON, Va. – Entering the weekend with momentum after Tuesday’s win over Wagner and program-best start in 24 years, the VMI lacrosse team heads to Richmond to face the No. 14 Spiders Saturday at noon at Robins Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
With a 3-1 record, the Keydets have earned their best start to a season since the 1995 campaign when VMI opened with a 4-0 record. The team was paced Tuesday by senior midfielder John O’Donnell, who scored a career-high four goals and added two assists to lead the Keydets to a 15-10 victory over Wagner in Staten Island.
Sophomore Ryan Perouty added two goals Tuesday and is now tied for ninth in the NCAA in consecutive games with at least one goals. His streak stands at 17 games dating back to his first game as a freshman in 2018 and has logged 39 goals over that span. Junior John Daniel entered the listing this week and is tied for 13th in the NCAA after scoring at least one goal in 14 consecutive games. He has logged 33 goals dating back to March 3, 2018 early in his sophomore season.
As a team the Keydets rank second in the league in groundballs per game averaging 35.33 per outing, and second in caused turnovers per game (12.0). VMI is atop the league in shots per game averaging more than 50 attempts per game.
Goalie Benjamin Stump looks to improve on his individual 3-1 record after logging 61 saves over the past four games and owns a 10.0 goals-against average having faced 171 shot attempts.
