Keydet Harriers Compete Well at JMU

NEW MARKET, Va.Competing in their second meet of the year, the VMI men’s and women’s cross country teams performed well at the JMU Invitational hosted by James Madison University Saturday at the New Market Battlefield in New Market, Virginia.

 

The men’s team came in third place with 41 points in their 8k competition while the VMI women arrived in sixth place with 157 points in a 6k race. Elon University placed first in the men’s race with 39 points while the Elon women also paced the field with just 32 points.

 

Senior Jahanzib Shahbaz came in second place overall with a time of 26:05 to lead the Keydets and was pursued closely by teammate Gavin Jenkins, who arrived in third place in 26:33. Freshman Jonathan Krone placed 10th overall in 27:40 for 10 team points while Carlos Fernandes (11th, 27:45) and Justin Adams (15th, 28:07) also contributed to VMI’s 41 points.

 

“I am proud of the athletes for competing at a high level,” said VMI head coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. “The athletes have set high expectations and are expecting success later in the season. Our next meet is at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University and I am confident we will have a great race there.”

 

Although they did not score team points, several other VMI men competed strong in the race including Ian Irizarry Negron, who came in 18th place in 28:13, and freshman Dennison Kelly who place 19th in 28:17. Sophomore Andre Jordan came in 20th in 28:22, while freshmen Alex Fiorillo (22nd, 28:34) and Ridge Clark (23rd, 28:42) also had impressive performances.

 

The VMI women were led by junior Anna Armfield who placed 23rd overall in 22:45 and senior Logan Luckett, who arrived in 32 overall for 26 points. Junior Sara Belamarich came in 49th place in 25:12 to score 34 points and freshman Tamara Washington came in 49th place in 26:54 for 37 points. Freshman Taylor Rice rounded out the team scoring for VMI for contributing 38 points in 56th place in 27:17.

 

Olivia Smoot, Isabela Melendez, Brittany Szczepanik, and Emily Wells also showed well for the Keydets at the race.

 

VMI next competes in three weeks at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University on Saturday, October 5 in Lehigh, Pennsylvania.
