HIGH POINT, N.C. – Coming in rested and healthy after a two-week break from competition, the VMI cross country teams earned high placements and season-best times at the VertCross Invitational hosted by High Point University Friday evening in High Point, North Carolina.

The men’s team placed fourth overall out of 15 schools with 100 points in an 8K race while the VMI women came in eighth place overall out of 19 teams with 288 points in a 6K competition.

Women’s senior Logan Luckett paced the Keydets with a 16th-place finish in 22:47 and was followed by junior Anna Armfield’s 46th-place mark of 23:42. Sara Belamarich (79th, 24:50), Taylor Rice (115, 26:47) and Emily Wells (121, 27:21) also earned team points for the VMI women.

“The women ran excellent finishing 8th out of 19 teams,” said VMI head coach Drew Ludtke. “Luckett ran very strong. Belamarich continues to improve and I was very happy with freshman Emily Wells, who has been getting better every week.

“Our men finished in fourth out of 15 teams. I was happy with Shahbaz and Jenkins at 2nd and 5th overall. Our 3rd, 4th and 5th runners also ran very strong races. We have a great team environment. The athletes continue to learn to work together and communicate with each other. They are also supporting each other in a competitive environment. I am happy with the progress and direction of the team.”

Shahbaz earned an 8k time of 24:54 to pace the Keydets and Jenkins registered a 25:18 for fifth place overall. Andre Jordan was the third VMI runner to finish and placed 32nd overall in 26:20 just before freshman Jonathon Krone came in 33rd in 26:23. Fellow freshman Dennison Kelly arrived in 35th to also score for the Keydets and finished in 26:25.

The VMI men were led by senior Jahanzib Shahbaz, who placed second overall just ahead of Gavin Jenkins’ finish in fifth place. Andre Jordan (32), Jonathon Krone (33) and Dennison Kelly (35) also scored team points for the Keydets. Seven other Keydets competed in the race for the VMI men.

The Keydets have two weeks to prepare for the Southern Conference championship race, which is slated for a 10 a.m. start on Saturday, November 2, hosted by ETSU in Johnson City, Tennessee.
