LEXINGTON, Va. - The VMI cross country programs announced their 2017 schedule on Thursday afternoon, a slate that includes three meets extremely close to Lexington.
The Keydets and head coach Drew Ludtke will open their season Sept. 1 at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invite, a meet that traditionally is run at a shorter distance than the standard distances. Last year, the women contested a 4K race and the men a 6K race on the Buford Meredith Course on Virginia Tech's campus in Blacksburg.
The Keydets then travel to New Market for the JMU Open on Sept. 9, before returning to Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite on Sept. 15. It will mark the second straight year in which the Keydets will compete at the alumni invite, after last season's meet saw Brandon White lead all Keydets with a 27th-place finish.
VMI's harriers then head to Louisville, Ky. to compete in the Greater Louisville Classic on Sept. 30 at Tom Sawyer Park. The park has hosted several marquee cross country events through the years, including the 2015 Division I Championships.
A meet in Kernersville, N.C., hosted by High Point on Oct. 13, is VMI's final tune-up for the conference championships on Oct. 28. Western Carolina will host that meet on its campus in Cullowhee, N.C.
The teams then wrap up their seasons on Nov. 10, when the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships take place at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.
