EARLYSVILLE, Va. - The VMI men's cross country team finished 20th in the region, as both the men's and women's programs wrapped up their seasons Friday at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, contested in Earlysville, Va.

Jay Broom paced the VMI men's team once again, as he finished in the top-75 with his 75th-place finish. Broom was just 128th through the first 2K, but moved into 81st at the 8K mark and closed well in 31:13.30. Freshman Ryan Drew, in his first collegiate 10K, ran with Broom the whole way and finished 77th in 31:17.20.

Brandon White was VMI's #3 runner in 31:44.40, finishing 103rd, and Luke Phillips was 134th in 32:23.70. Both White and Phillips were running the final cross country races of their careers.

Justin Adams (159th/32:54.00) and Micah Ellington (176th/33:27.90) were the other finishers for the VMI men. The Keydets finished 20th as a team, ahead of Clemson, College of Charleston and UNCG, among others, in the meet won by N.C. State.

"Just like he did for most of the season, Jay Broom led the way for our men's team today," said VMI head coach Dr. Drew Ludtke. "I am extremely happy with his progress in each of the seasons I have been able to coach him thus far. He and Brandon White have been the leaders of the pack for us and helped make the team a quality one. In addition, freshmen Ryan Drew and Logan Luckett put in excellent results for us as well today."

On the women's side, Luckett led the way for the Keydets with a 22:24.50 time over the 6K course. Luckett placed 96th overall and became the first VMI freshman since 2007 to lead the Keydet women in every race during a season.

Also in action for the Keydet women were Kennedy Flynn (206th/24:53.70) and Kelly Russell (219th/26:16.50).

N.C. State won the women's team title as well, while the Keydets did not record a team score due to fielding a limited squad.

"I was particularly happy with our seniors today," said Coach Ludtke. "White and Luke Phillips put in quality races on the men's side, while Kelly Russell ran solidly in her final race, as did Kennedy Flynn, who plans to graduate early. We now look forward to indoor and outdoor track, where we expect to see more great performances."
