2016-17 will mark Karen Harlow's third year in the VMI athletic department, but she was no stranger to the Institute prior to her current role. She spent three years in VMI's purchasing department, working there from 2010-2013 before being transferred to the Center for Leadership and Ethics, where she spent a year as its Financial Services Specialist. There, she was responsible for preparing the Center's budget, monthly financial reporting and procuring all goods and services.
During her time in purchasing, Harlow was a procurement officer, responsible for purchasing for 12 departments across campus and the surplus property program. She also spent time as the Executive Secretary for the Physics and Astronomy department.
Prior to her time in Lexington, Harlow spent over 26 years with Mundet, Inc., a company headquartered in Colonial Heights. She was the Director of Human Resources for a decade, a position that included overseeing payroll and accounting information, and then was promoted to a supervisory position, that of Controller, where she oversaw the accounting and HR departments. She relocated to Rockbridge County in 2009 and began work at VMI in 2010.
Harlow received an Associates Degree from Southern Virginia in 1976 and a Bachelors Degree from St. Leo University in 2003.
