POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Looking for their first MAAC Tournament win in program history, the VMI water polo team fell by a 9-7 score to Iona College Sunday afternoon at McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie, New York.
The Keydets (22-12, 9-7 MAAC) fought back from a 3-0 deficit to knot the score at 4-4 heading into the half. Shelby Barkley and Sophia DelBondio scored for the Keydets in the third period but the Keydets surrendered three goals in the same stanza to allow the Gaels an advantage heading into the fourth.
DelBondio scored again in the final period but Iona notched on two more goals to secure the victory.
Barkley finished the match with a game-high four goals for the Keydets while DelBondio had two and Rebecca Serrano one to finish their VMI careers. Barkley scored three in the opening half and finished with three drawn exclusions. Natalie Rivas finished the match with an assist and four drawn exclusions.
The win for the Gaels marked the second straight MAAC consolation victory over the Keydets as Iona has won five straight consolation matches overall. Gaels Megan Hofer, Devika Joshi and Hannah Schultz finished the game with two goals apiece.
In the ensuing MAAC championship match, Wagner topped Marist by a 10-7 score to claim its fifth consecutive conference title.
