LA VERNE, Calif. – Looking to finish out strong its Spring Furlough trip to California and momentum before resuming conference play, the VMI water polo team earned a 16-10 victory over La Verne Friday morning at Las Flores Pool in La Verne, California.
The win gave the Keydets (15-8) a 4-1 mark during their west coast swing to complete a successful midpoint breakaway from conference action. The Keydets were dominant on the offensive side of the pool as they outshot La Verne by a 31-17 margin throughout the match.
After La Verne scored first in the opening minute of the game, the Keydets rattled off eight unanswered goals the remainder of the period and first few minutes of the second. The Leopards would add a few late goals in the second period but not after VMI had built a solid 8-4 lead by the half. The Keydets registered eight more goals during the second half while allowing just six La Verne goals en route to the victory.
Senior Shelby Barkley scored six goals in the win to lead VMI while Natalie Rivas and Sarah Dolitsky both scored three times. Emma Perez scored twice and Zoe Salafatinos and Rebecca Serrano put in the other two scores.
The Keydets resume league play next weekend in Poughkeepsie, New York, with four matches hosted by Marist College. Battling for a spot in the MAAC Tournament at the end of April, VMI will face No. 17 Wagner Saturday at 3 p.m. before taking on La Salle at 7:30 p.m. in the nightcap.
On Sunday, VMI will battle with (RV) Iona College at 10:30 a.m. before facing St. Francis Brooklyn at 4:30 p.m.
