ERIE, Pa. – With a 3-0 mark heading into Sunday, the VMI water polo team kept its season-opening streak alive with two more victories as the Keydets took down Gannon, 12-7, and host Mercyhurst, 10-4, at the Prep-Villa Events Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Facing Gannon at an early 8 a.m. match time, the Keydets were led by senior utility Shelby Barkley, who logged her third consecutive match with six goals scored. Rebecca Serrano and Sarah Dolitsky both added a pair while Sophia DelBondio and Natalie Rivas each added one.
In the cage, sophomore keeper Isabel French came up big for the VMI defense by logging 17 saves, her season high through five matches.
"I was happy with how we progressed throught the weekend, especially defensively," said VMI head coach Ryan Pryor. "The communications was very strong, particularly for this early in the season and we did a better job forcing our opponent into tough shots as th the weekend went on."
The Keydets later on faced the host Mercyhurst Lakers in the early afternoon and claimed a 10-4 win behind a stellar defensive effort. Barkley earned three goals to lead VMI while Haley Scott added a pair.DelBondio, Emma Noble, Caroline Wojtas, Rivas and Dolitsky all earned one apiece .
French finished the match with 10 saves while senior Catie Berry earned one.
Barkley finished the weekend with 25 goals for an average of five per match.
VMI has two weeks away from competition before returning to the pool versus Mercyhurst in a neutral setting Saturday, Mar. 3, hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. The Keydets also face Hartwick that day at 5:30 p.m.
