ERIE, Pa. – The VMI water polo team remained undefeated two days into the season with wins over Saint Francis (PA) and La Salle on the first day of the Laker Invite Saturday at the Prep-Villa Event Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The Keydets (3-0) defeated Saint Francis in their first match of the day by a close 15-12 score behind six goals from Shelby Barkley and four from Natalie Rivas. Junior Sarah Dolitsky contributed a pair of scores while Emma Noble, Haley Scott and Rebecca Serrano each tallied one.
VMI goalkeeper Isabel French recorded six saves to preserve the Keydet victory.
In its evening match, the Keydets registered a 16-8 win over MAAC foe La Salle. Barkley again scored six goals in the win while freshman Zoe Salafatinos earned her first career goals as a Keydet with two in the match. Serrano added another pair with Sophia DelBondio, Emma Perez, Scott, Rivas, Amber Hamil and Dolitsky each contributing one.
Barkley, VMI’s all-time leading scorer, already has 16 goals through three matches.
French logged four saves while senior Catie Berry saw time in the cage and tallied one save.
The Keydets return to action Sunday with an early 8 a.m. match versus Gannon before capping the tourney with a 1 p.m. match against host Mercyhurst.
