WASHINGTON, Pa. – Looking to start off the new season with a win, the VMI water polo team accomplished the feat with an easy 22-3 victory over Washington & Jefferson Friday night at Henry Natatorium in Washington, Pennsylvania.
The Keydets got off to a quick start with a 6-1 advantage behind three goals from Shelby Barkley and one apiece from Haley Scott, Rebecca Serrano and Sarah Dolitsky. In the second period, Sophia DelBondio, Emma Noble, Caroline Wojtas, and Natalie Rivas scored goals while Scott and Serrano each added to their total.
“It was a great way to open the season and I was very pleased with our overall effort and our balance to get goals from 10 different players,” said head coach Ryan Pryor. “After some early jitters, we settled in and played well.”
While holding Washington and Jefferson scoreless in the third period, the Keydets notched on seven goals to advance their lead to 21-2 with one period remaining.
The Keydets resume action Saturday at the Laker Invitational hosted by Mercyhurst College. VMI faces Saint Francis at 1 p.m. and La Salle at 6:30 p.m. The Keydets will conclude the tournament with two matches Sunday with Gannon slated for 8 a.m. and Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
