STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - A week after nearly topping No. 17 Wagner at home, the VMI water polo team came within minutes of pulling off the upset the second time around as the Keydets fell to the Seahawks in overtime, 13-10, Sunday afternoon in Staten Island.
VMI pulled ahead of the Seahawks, 8-7, with only 3:21 left in the match following a goal by senior Cecilya Lundy, but Wagner was able to tie it up with 1:46 on the clock to force overtime, which consists of two additional periods. Wagner pulled ahead, 10-9, after the first overtime period and scored three more in the second overtime to VMI's one to secure the 13-10 final score.
A day after becoming VMI's all-time leading scorer, junior Shelby Barkley led the Keydets with four goals Sunday while freshman Emma Noble contributed three. Lundy scored two goals in the match with junior Natalie Rivas tallying the other goal for the Keydets.
Kimberly Watson and Erica Hardy both scored four goals to pace the Seahawks. Seahawk goalie Emily Riddle earned the win while VMI keeper Isabel French picked up the loss.
The Keydets close the regular season next Saturday in New Rochelle, New York, where VMI will face No. 24 Marist at 10:30 a.m. and host Iona at 4 p.m.
