SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After nearly a month off from competition, the VMI rifle teams returned to the range in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where they defeated host Wofford College Saturday at Wofford Rifle Range.
The VMI mixed team won by an aggregate score of 4426 points to win the overall competition followed by the VMI women with 4347 points. The host Terriers combined for 4320 points in the loss.
Hunter Jacob led the way for the mixed team with an air rifle total of 568 and was trailed closely by Samantha Alexander’s 562. Chris Milliken and Jacob Lagace both totaled a 544 to score points for the team with Nick Reynolds participating with a 541.
In the mixed smallbore portion, sophomore William Davidson paced the group by tying his career high of 562 and John Pitman registered a 556 to lead the team. Reynolds came in third with a 548 while Alexander also scored team points with her 542 smallbore tally.
The VMI women were led by Alice Chiu’s 565 in the air rifle with Katherine Watson coming in second with a 564. Sabrina Bell (559) and Loyce Lightfoot (season-high 556) were the third and fourth scorers, respectively, while Kerrie Lightfoot shot a 548 air rifle.
The women’s smallbore segment was paced by Watson, who shot a 544 for the team with Loyce Lightfoot logging a second-best score of 538. Chiu shot a 534 while Joelle Henry also scored team points by way of her 487 smallbore.
The VMI rifle teams have the rest of the semester off from competition and will not resume action until January 27, a dual slated with The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
