CHARLESTON, S.C. - The VMI men's and women's rifle teams placed fourth and fifth, respectively, facing two ranked opponents and SoCon rival The Citadel Saturday at the Inouye Marksmanship Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
Fourth-ranked Air Force won the match with 4,767 points while No. 20 North Georgia placed second with 4,547 points to top The Citadel men (4,518), the VMI men (4,488) and the VMI women (4,408)
Wofford scored 4,292 to take sixth, and The Citadel women placed seventh with 4,263 points.
The VMI men were paced in the smallbore by Zach Johnson and Andrew Hickey, who both shot a 557 for the event. Freshman Hunter Jacob showed well with the team's third-best score of 550, while Nick Reynolds also contributed points for the squad with a 547.
Jacob led the team's air rifle efforts with his 574 for the event with Reynolds coming in one point behind at 573. Matt Lusardi finished with a 567 and Hickey came out with a 563 tally as the team logged a 2277 air rifle total.
The VMI women's smallbore group finished with 2158 points for the category led by Samantha Alexander's 557 and a 548 from Katherine Watson. Loyce Lightfoot and Ellana Avery also contributed toward the total by way of their respective 533 and 520 scores.
Alexander also led the women's team air rifle efforts as she registered a 572 toward the 2250 total. Kerrie Lightfoot finished second on the team with a 561 while Watson came in third with a 559. Junior Rachel Jankelow's 558 rounded out the scoring efforts for squad.
The VMI rifle teams return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11, with a home dual against UAB. The match will begin at 8 a.m. at Kilbourne Hall.
