LEXINGTON, Va. - Hosting multiple Southern Conference foes, the VMI rifle teams put up a solid showing as both the men's and women's teams fell to Morehead State and North Georgia but defeated Wofford College Saturday at Kilbourne Hall.
Morehead State took top honors with an aggregate score of 4604 points while second-place North Georgia finished with 4581. The VMI men scored a 4486 (2194 smallbore, 2292 air rifle) on the day while the women placed fourth overall with 4428 points (2173 SB, 2255 Air). Wofford College left the competition with 4268 points on the board.
In the men's smallbore, senior Andrew Hickey led the team with 564 points with fellow senior Zach Johnson trailing closely with 554. Freshman Nick Reynolds (539) and William Davidson (537) also scored points in the event for the Keydets.
The air rifle portion for the men's squad was paced by freshman Hunter Jacob's 581 while Matt Lusardi and Davidson both logged a 571 for team points. Hickey and Reynolds rounded out the competition on the men's side as both registered a 569 for the category.
The VMI women's smallbore was led by Samantha Alexander's 550 while junior Alice Chiu was close behind with a 544. Junior Katherine Watson tallied a 540 to score for the Keydets with Loyce Lightfoot also contributing at 539 points.
Alexander also paced the women's team in the air rifle by shooting a 570 for the day with Chiu again close behind with a 569. Junior Rachel Jankelow shot a 560 for team points while Watson was the final team scorer at 556 points.
The event marked the final competition of the 2016 calendar season for the VMI rifle teams. The teams will resume competition on Jan. 28 in Charleston, South Carolina, where the Keydets will face host The Citadel, North Georgia and Wofford in another SoCon meet.
