MOREHEAD, Ky. – Resuming competition after a week off, the VMI rifle teams competed a close match with host Morehead State as the Eagles’ mixed team earned a 4612 to top both Keydet squads Saturday morning in Morehead, Kentucky.
The VMI men’s teams shot a 4501 (2212 smallbore, 2289 air rifle) for second place while the VMI women’s team tallied a 4426 (2177 smallbore, 2249 air rifle) for third in a dual format competition.
In the men’s smallbore, VMI senior Andrew Hickey led the way with a 565 with junior Matt Lusardi earning a 552 for the second-best tally for the event. Sophomore John Pitman (548) and senior Zach Johnson (547) also scored points for the team. Freshman Nick Reynolds logged a 540 in the segment.
Freshman William Davidson exploded out of the scene in the men’s air rifle to lead the squad with a 580 while fellow freshman Hunter Jacob tallied a 572 for the team’s second-best total for the event. Hickey’s 569 was good for third on the team for points while Reynolds scored a 568 for the last total that counted for team points. Johnson shot a 555 to also represent the men’s team in the air rifle.
The VMI women’s smallbore was paced by Alice Chiu’s 552 with fellow junior Katherine Watson coming in second for the team with a 545. Samantha Alexander (542) and Loyce Lightfoot (538) also scored team points for the segment, while Ellana Avery participated with a tally of 493.
In the air rifle segment, the VMI women were led by Chiu’s 570 with Alexander following closely with a 562. Rachel Jankelow shot a 560 for third on the team to also score team points while Watson provided the final points tally by shooting a 557. Sophomore Kerrie Lightfoot participated in the section with a 548.
The VMI rifle teams continue fall action next Sunday, Oct. 23, with a dual at North Georgia and Georgia Military.
