ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Competing in their second match of the season, the VMI mixed and women’s rifle teams defeated John Jay Saturday morning in a tri-match hosted by the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
The Midshipmen took top honors with a combined score of 4634, while the VMI mixed (4507) and women’s (4432) teams took second and third, respectively. John Jay College earned a combined tally of 4390 between the smallbore and air rifle events for fourth place.
The VMI mixed team scored a 2277 in the air rifle and a 2230 in the smallbore for its combined score of 4507. Freshman Hunter Jacob logged a team-best 572 in the air rifle, slightly edging out senior Zach Johnson’s 270. Freshman Nick Reynolds earned a 568 while senior Andrew Hickey also registered team points with his 567.
Reynolds led the mixed team in the smallbore competition with a 564 ahead of Hickey’s 558 for the event. Senior Mathew Lusardi logged a 555 while Johnson also scored with his 553.
The VMI women were also strong in the air rifle, led by Samantha Alexander’s 571 and Rachel Jankelow’s 561. Katherine Watson and Kerrie Lightfoot were the third and fourth scorers, respectively, as both tallied a 560.
Alice Chiu led the way for the women’s team in the smallbore segment with a 553 and was followed by Alexander’s 549. Ellana Avery (541) and Watson (540) also made qualifying marks to receive team points.
The Keydets return to action Saturday, Oct. 15, with a dual at Morehead State. Action is slated to begin at 8 a.m. in Morehead, Kentucky.
