Rifle Teams Defeat The Citadel to Open Season

LEXINGTON, Va. - Looking to start the 2016-17 season off on the right foot, the VMI mixed and women's rifle teams defeated The Citadel Saturday afternoon at Kilbourne Hall.

The mixed team topped the Citadel mixed team by a 4479-4459 ratio while the VMI women's team defeated The Citadel women by a 4423-4139 margin.

"It was a great first match and we saw some positive things happen today," said VMI head coach Col. Bill Bither. "Hopefully we can keep it up next week as we compete at the Naval Academy."

The VMI men shot a 2207 smallbore score and 2272 air rifle tally while the VMI women earned a 2159 in the smallbore and 2264 air rifle.

In the smallbore, senior Zach Johnson led all shooters with a 559, edging out a 556 shot by The Citadel’s Morgan Long. Fellow seniors Andrew Hickey and Mathew Lusardi came in third and fourth, respectively in the overall smallbore standings as Hickey shot a 554 followed by Lusardi’s 551. VMI freshman Hunter Jacob also scored points for the Keydets with a 549 for the event.

For the air rifle category, Citadel’s Long led the way with a 577 with VMI’s Hickey coming in not far behind with a 572. VMI women’s team member Samantha Alexander came in third overall with a 571, tying Hunter Jacob’s score. Alice Chiu shot a 569 for the VMI women’s second-best score with teammate Katherine Watson coming in seventh overall with a 567.

VMI men’s team freshman Chris Milliken also had a top-10 finish in the air rifle as he shot a 566 for the third-best total on the men’s side.

Among the women’s shooters in the smallbore competition, Loyce Lightfood led the team with a 544 just ahead of Chiu’s 542 finish for the event.

The Keydets return to action next Saturday to face multiple MAC schools hosted by the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
