Keydets Finish Day One of ECAC Championships
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swam well Friday on the first day of the three-day 2019 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.
Freshman Ryan Cooper broke the VMI varsity and freshman records in the 200-IM, finishing in 1:56.19. The varsity record had stood for nine years.
Sophie Svoboda broke her own women’s 200-IM records (varsity and freshman) twice on the day, racing to a 2:04.77 in the finals to place second.
Carisa Kunkle, Svoboda, Morgan Davis and Sarah MacDougall broke the school record in the 400-medley relay in 4:04.55.
The men’s B 400-medley relay team of Stephen Hopta, Cooper, Andrew Mills and Zach Emerson broke the freshmen record in 3:30.49 and Hopta broke the 100-backstroke freshmen record leading off the race (51.35).
At the end of the first day, the VMI men were 10th in a 20-team field while the women were 11th out of 17.
Competition starts Saturday at 10 a.m. with the finals beginning at 6 p.m.
