ATHENS, Ga. - The VMI swimming and diving team posted five ECAC qualifying marks and set a new freshman event record as competition continued at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championship Friday in Athens, Ga.
The majority of the Keydet cuts Friday came in the 100 fly, where Jacob Smilie, John Walker and Michael Morrison all posted ECAC A cuts. Smilie timed in at 53.04 in the prelims, but wound up 24th in the final, while Walker was at 53.13 (23rd) and Morrison finished 25th overall in 53.66. Smilie also returned later in the meet to go under 53 seconds in the 100 back for the first time, as he finished 20th with a 52.77 time.
Both David Turbyfill and Mitch Fornwald hit B cuts in their respective events, with Turbyfill finishing 24th in the 200 free (1:47.65) and Fornwald finishing 19th in the 100 breast. Fornwald's prelim time was 1:01.73, while William Soldow finished 21st in that event with a 1:03.87 time.
The freshman record was set by Morgan Davis, who touched the wall in 1:02.41 in the 100 fly and finished 40th.
The women's squad currently ranks 10th with 74 points in standings led by Florida Gulf Coast (1120.5) over Liberty (935). The men's team is eighth in standings paced by UMBC (1001).
VMI swimming and diving will return to action Saturday for the final day of the CCSA Championships. Prelims get underway at 10 a.m.
