Radford Defeats VMI baseball 14-5

LEXINGTON, Va. – Radford University broke open a close game in the eighth inning and went on to defeat the VMI baseball team Tuesday 14-5 in non-conference action.

J.D. Mundy had a three-run homer for Radford in the top of the first, but VMI countered with four in the bottom of the frame. Callen Nuccio, Jake Huggins, Josh Hollifield, Will Knight and Nathan Loyd each singled in the inning.

The Highlanders scored twice in the sixth inning and pulled away with seven runs in the eighth.

Nuccio, Huggins and Knight each had two hits for VMI and Loyd drove in two runs.

Andrew Szamski went 3-5 with two runs, two RBI and a double for Radford (7-13). Andrew Nardi threw six innings of scoreless relief for the win.

The Keydets (4-16) open Southern Conference play this weekend at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. The teams are scheduled to play single games Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
