Virginia Defeats VMI Baseball 9-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout Tuesday afternoon as the University of Virginia baseball team defeated visiting VMI 9-0 in non-conference play.

The Cavaliers used two big innings for the victory, a four-run first inning and a five-run fifth frame.

Two Keydets threw very well out of the bullpen. Sophomore right-hander Sam Ewald came on in the second inning and was perfect in his three innings, erasing all nine batters he faced with one strikeout. Freshman lefty Nathan Light finished the game, working 3 and 1/3 innings, allowing no hits, no walks with five strikeouts.

Will Knight and Josh Hollifield had hits for VMI. Ryan Smoot reached base twice with a walk and a HBP and Cody Warner walked twice. VMI left 10 runners on base while Virginia left just four stranded.

Zach Messinger earned the win for the Cavaliers (1-3), tossing three innings of one-hit ball.

VMI (2-3) travels to Clemson University this weekend for three non-conference games. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
