LEXINGTON, Va. - Looking to bounce back following last week's 1-0 setback to Hampton, the VMI women's soccer team travels to Dover, Delaware, to face Delaware State Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m.
The Keydets (0-1) fought hard in their season opener against the Lady Pirates but fell short despite outshooting Hampton by a 14-8 count. Senior Sierra Brewer led VMI with a career-high seven shot attempts in the loss.
Delaware State is coming off two difficult losses last weekend as they fell by a 3-1 score to host Saint Peter's before taking a 5-0 loss to Wagner in Staten Island.
Thursday afternoon's game with the Keydets marks the season opener for the Hornets at Alumni Stadium, the first of four games Delaware State is set to host over the next two weeks.
Savannah Ay scored the lone goal for the Hornets against Saint Peter's last week as Delaware State matched their opponent in shot attempts with eight apiece.
VMI goalie Noelle Heilpern played a complete match last week against Hampton and recorded one save for the day.
