LEXINGTON, Va. - Sayres McKenna scored in the fourth minute of overtime, sending the Western Carolina Catamounts past the VMI Keydets, 1-0, in SoCon women's soccer action Friday in Lexington, Va.

After the two teams had combined for just eight shots on goal in regulation, a deflection came to the feet of WCU's Emily Threatt. Threatt dished off to McKenna, who stopped her dribble and then went around a pair of VMI defenders. McKenna then beat VMI keeper Ceci Keppeler to the lower right for the game-winner.

"I thought we played well enough to win today and had a great overall effort," said VMI head coach Chris Bergmann. "This was an impressive battle throughout and we had good energy. I was proud of our effort, but unfortunately, Western Carolina finished its chance in overtime."

Friday's match was a defensive slugfest, as the teams combined for just 16 total shots in regulation and had very limited offensive chances. The Keydets (3-8-1, 0-2-1 SoCon) pushed the tempo early in overtime, and an Amber Risheg shot forced a diving save by WCU (4-7-1, 1-2) keeper Jacquelyn Gnassi in the opening minute. That was VMI's final opportunity, however, as the next shot was McKenna's game-winner goal.

For the match, WCU held a 12-6 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Keppeler was credited with five saves while Gnassi stopped four tries.

VMI women's soccer will return to action Sunday, when the Keydets play host to ETSU at 1 p.m.
