LEXINGTON, Va. - Wrestling's Ronnie Ellsworth and basketball's Stan Okoye have been named the VMI Athletes of the Week, for the time period ending Nov. 16.
Ellsworth picked up the first tournament title of his VMI career Sunday, winning the N.C. State Wolfpack Open's 197-lb. grouping by going 3-0. After a bye in the opening round of the bracket, Ellsworth made quick work of NC State’s Austin Haigler, registering a pinfall at the 1:37 mark of the first period. In the semifinals, the senior knocked off another member of the Wolfpack, this time KaRonne Jones via a 4-3 decision. In the finals, he defeated Shane Nolan of UNC Pembroke 3-2 to earn the title.
Okoye averaged 23.5 points and 11 rebounds this week in two Keydet wins to open the Runnin' Roos basketball season. He notched 26 and eight against Randolph College on Friday, before striking for his ninth career double-double Sunday against UMBC. The Keydets went to 2-0 for the first time under head coach Duggar Baucom, and will bid for their first 3-0 start since 1985-86 Tuesday night against UVA Wise. Game time at Cameron Hall is set for 7 p.m. Wrestling returns to action Sunday at the Keystone Classic, which takes place in Philadelphia, Pa.
