VMI Wrestling Announces Incoming Class
LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI wrestling team announced its incoming class for the 2019-20 season on Wednesday, a group that consists of 25 grapplers that will start their VMI careers this winter.
“This group understands what it takes to be successful academically and athletically,” said second year head coach Jim Gibson. “These young men take wrestling very seriously, and I expect a handful of them to step in and make an immediate impact. The large group will add competitiveness to our room, in return, making everyone better.”

Andrew Allgood – Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian High School
A three-sport athlete at Norfolk Christian High School, lettering in wrestling, football and baseball … wrested for head coach Jeremy Ingram, VMI class of 1995 …won 88 matches … the first National Prep Qualifier in school history … Most Outstanding Wrestler as a senior … placed fourth in the VISAA State Tournament in 2019 … first place in the TCIS Conference Tournament at 195 pounds … earned the Ambassador Award (Coaches Award for Christian character and leadership) as a junior … a captain in his final two seasons.
Zach Brown – Culpeper, Va./Eastern View High School
A four-year letterwinner in wrestling and football at Eastern View High School … coached by his dad … a state champion … NHSCA All-American … most pins … a member of Team Cobra Wrestling … National Hall of Fame Student-Athlete of the Year (Div. 3-4) … a Daughters of the America Revolution Award recipient.
Doug Cameron – Chesapeake, Va./Hickory High School
A four-year letterwinner … team MVP in 2019 … all-region 2017-19 … all-state in 2019, placing fifth … had a record of 65-19 (excluding invitationals and open tournaments) … a member of the Hickory Area Wrestling Klub … had the most pins on the team in 2019.
Ian Cameron - Chesapeake, Va./Hickory High School
A three-year letterwinner for head coach Ben Summerlin … wrestled at 145 and 152 … a 5A Region Champ … career record of 50-21 … earned the Chesapeake Schools Scholar-Athlete Award.
Ethan Carpenter – Richmond, Va./Monacan High School
A four-year letterwinner for coach Ike Tucker … a captain … wrestled at 126, 138 and 152 … earned the Outstanding Wrestler, Most Valuable and the Coaches Awards … had an undefeated regular season as a senior ... all-state … had the most varsity win in school history (131) … a three-time regional finalist … a regional champion … a member of Virginia Team Predator … lettered four years in lacrosse and two in football.
Cameron Chicella – Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes High School
A four-year letterwinner … went 29-20 as a junior and 33-6 as a senior … earned the district championship as a senior … qualified for state competition as a junior and senior … a regional place-winner in his final two seasons … a member of the honor roll every semester of high school … was the starter at 106 for Team Virginia at the Disney Duals in the summer of 2018.
Jobey Chishko – Jeannette, Pa./Pa. Cyber/Penn Trafford
Lettered for four years at Penn Trafford for head coach Rich Ginther … placed seventh in the state as a sophomore and fifth as a senior.
Alex Credle – Summerfield, Conn./Northern Guilford High School
Lettered in three seasons at Northern Guilford … academic all-conference … voted the team’s hardest worker as a senior … wrestled with the Hard Knocks Club Team … a PFC in the NC Army National Guard.
David Diaz – Saltsburg, Pa./The Kiski School
Lettered for coach Joe Ross at the Kiski School … wrestled at 126, 132 and 138 in his career … earned the Coaches Award as a junior and senior … had a record of 52-31 overall … a two-time PAISWT State place-winner … a two-time captain … also was a member of the varsity cross country and track and field rosters.
Jakob Fam – Norfolk, Va./Granby High School
Started all four years of his high school career at 126, 132, 152 and 160 pounds … went 20-6 as a senior … earned the Comet Award three times for wrestling well and good academic standing … went to the regional tournament all four seasons … a member of the Mat Rats Wrestling Club for nine years … in the international baccalaureate program all four years.
Seth Fillers – Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph High School
Lettered for four seasons at Mount Saint Joseph … wrestled at 138, earning the Allen Smith Award … had a career 103-38 record, and didn’t compete as a senior … was a member of the Maryland National Team and was a National Prep All-American … a three-time Green State Champ … had sixth, third and second-place finishes at the MIS, and fourth, third and second at the War on the Shore.
Bronson Garber – Millersburg, Pa./Upper Dauphin High School
A four-year letterwinner for Coach Rupp at Upper Dauphin High … three-year captain … a four-time PIAA State Medalist; fifth place in ninth grade – fourth place in 10th, sixth place in 11th and third as a senior … his 170 wins were the most in UDA … first four-time medalist … the Tri-Valley League Wrestler of the Year … also the Schuylkill League Wrestler of the Year … Southeast Region First-Team All-Star … earned academic all-state honors for all four years.
John Hammond – Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek High School
Two-time letterman at Beavercreek High School … captain his senior season … a two-time D1 District Qualifier for Ohio … a state qualifier in 2019 … had a 78-30 varsity record … all-area, all-conference and all-league … two-time all-state … regional freestyle and Greco Roman placer for team Ohio … made the 2017 Future Olympian List … as a cadet at Fargo, made it to the blood round … 2018 Gold Medalist at the AAU Junior Olympics.
Solomon Harris – Richmond, Va./Richmond Community High School
Earned two varsity letters at Richmond Community High School … wrestled in the 195-pound weight class … a 3B VHSL Regional Champion and was sixth at the 3A VHSL State Tournament … placed first at three local tournaments … had a 17-15 record as a junior and improved to 33-8 as a senior … ranked sixth at 195 lbs. according to VAWA High School individual rankings … competed with Virginia Team Predator … played four years on the tennis team.
Jon Hoover – Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny
A four-year letterman at North Allegheny … two-time captain … 115-38 career record … a two-time Chris Ebert Award Winner, given to the person on the team for exceptional leadership … earned the Tough Tiger Award, given to the toughest person in the room … received the Ty Moore Memorial Award, given to a senior that is going on to wrestle in college … competed with the Tiger, Pitbull and All-American Wrestling Clubs.
John McGarry - Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd Kellam High School
Placed sixth in the state as a sophomore and fourth as a junior … also played varsity soccer.
Sean McKinney – Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon High School
A four-year letterwinner at Mount Lebanon High School … a three-time WPIAL Qualifier … PWCA All-Academic Team … state freestyle qualifier … 84 career wins … all-county … wrestled at the Quest School of Wrestling … team captain.
Nathan Miller – Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani High School
A three-year letterman wrestling at 152 & 60 … third in state Greco in 2018 … second in state freestyle in 2018 … competed with Grapplers club … earned a NROTC (Marines) Scholarship.
Nick Onea – Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM
Lettered for four seasons under head coach Gary Kenner at Pottsville High School … the freshman and all-time wins leader at the school … also competed in soccer.
Michael Parnell - South Riding, Va./Freedom High School
All-county, 160-lbs weight class; March 2018 … first-place Potomac District, 160-lb weight class; February 2018 … second-place Region 5C 160-lb weight class; February 2018 … state Qualifier, 160-lbs weight class; March 2018…all-state wrestler (6th place finish), 160lbs weight class; February 2019.
Joe Peila – Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South High School
Lettered for three seasons at Plymouth South High School … wrestled at 145, 170 and 180 pounds … earned the Coaches Award … also competed on the track and field team for two years … a member of the Dungeon Wrestling Club.
Noah Roulo – Petersburg, Va./Matoaca High School
Wrestled for four years at Matoaca High, serving as team captain as a junior and senior … team MVP in 2019 … a two-time state and regional champion, four-time all-state and twice he made it to the NHSCA Round of 12 … his brother Blake is a graduate assistant wrestling coach at Averett University.
Michael Shook – Carthage, N.C./Union Pines High School
Lettered in all four years at Union Pines High School … a two-year captain . . . earned a North Carolina Wrestling Factory Scholarship … earned the coaches award.
Colby Tennyson – Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs High School
A four-year letterwinner at Boiling Springs High School … won 32 matches as a senior … wrestled at 182 and 195 pounds … a two-time Mid-Penn Conference Colonial Division first-team honoree … a three-time district qualifier and two-time district placer … his team won the District 3 Championship in 2018 … also competed in track and football.
Josh Yost – Powhatan, Va./Benedictine College Prep
A member of the Benedictine College Preparatory wrestling team for four seasons … had 160 career wins and was a state champion … a Prep National All-American all four years … brother David Yost ‘12 wrestled at VMI and was his head coach at Benedictine as a senior … a member of Virginia Team Predator.
