DURHAM, N.C. - Competing in their final tuneup before next week's Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, the VMI track and field teams earned additional qualifying marks for the IC4A/ECAC Championships Saturday on Day Two of the Duke Invitational in Durham, North Carolina.
The day was overloaded with track and field events because of Friday's postponement due to inclement weather.
"We ran what we needed to looking towards conference next week," said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. "But we also were conservative with a few athletes to make sure we are ready for next week."
Freshman Jordin Poindexter of the men's team ran an IC4A qualifying time of 10.85 in the 100-meter dash to place 21st overall in the competition. He would go on to qualify for the IC4A Championships in the 200-meter as well with his 28th-place finish time of 22.20 seconds.
Blaine Ashton came in 12th place in the men's triple jump with a distance of 14.26 meters, which ties him at No. 4 on the SoCon list marks for this outdoor season.
Ariana Ruffin and Ahliyah Williams performed well in the women's 400-meter as Ruffin placed 42nd overall in 58.23 seconds and Williams followed closely behind in 59.68 seconds.
James Granderson had a solid performance in the men's 110-meter hurdles by arriving in 22nd overall in 15.08 seconds.
The Keydets return to action next weekend at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Samford in Birmingham, Alabama.
